I have acquired some drawers for the back of the 130.
Yesterday I bolted down the frame, fitted the drawers and drawer stops.
Next job is to put the top back on them.

I finished my motor trimming apprenticeship! I'd like to thank exmoor trim for sending me all the course material (ie a carpet set that was not even close to fitting).
Jokes aside, I did the front carpet just over a year ago, which makes it feel pretty plush and actually isn't the cleaning hassle I thought it would be, so I ordered a rear set last week. Bearmach was the same price as exmoor but the shipping was miles cheaper, so I treated myself to a full LED light kit too.
Fitted the lot on the weekend and all looks great

Had the engine stop control (EDIC) replaced this week. It’s luxury to be able to turn the key which results in the motor turning off.

Great to hear the draws are in and I guess the canopy is bolted down Vlad, I found the spare keys for the canopy and draws so will mail to you.
I fitted the new clutch, DM flywheel, Ashcroft gearbox with HD bearings and taller top gear + transfer with ATB to the 130. First impression is good and seems to be quieter at 100kmh but had to go overseas for a week so busting to get back and go for a good drive

Finally managed to remove the old steering damper which required a lot of work with the angle grinder and replace with a new Bilstien on my 300Tdi project and then mounted the APT steering guard.
Also replaced the rear axles and hubs with heavy duty ones I have been waiting on since December. Then got the rego renewed!

Changed the 4 ball joint boots, one of them was cracked. I scooped out the old grease, (one was dry and crusty), and refilled them with MDS grease. To do all 4 of them took about 1.5 hours. I noticed there's not much grease in them, so was generous in refilling them. all the ball joints still felt tight and smooth, so not bad after 220,000 kms. I expect they'll be good for another 5 years without any attention. The new boots came from MR Automotive in brissy at $8.5 each.

Replaced the little plastic clip that holds the bonnet stay in place, after the clip fell out over bad corrugations and the stay rattled around and scratched the top of the mudguard.
Replacement cost $20 including postage and I siliconed it in place, but I don't trust it, so in future I'm going to cable-tie tie the stay in place when heading for corrugations.

Purchased some NEW Brembo Rear Brake Pads, hoping that this solve my squeaky rear brakes. The difference between the old RDA and the Brembo is that the Brembo don't have a slot across the middle....
Anyways, new pads in and....... that flamin squeak is still there, if not worse, so I'm now thinking can glazed Discs be causing my brakes to squeak.....
Will try sanding the Discs then to roughen them up a bit and see what comes of that then.....

Washed it a couple of days ago. Took the big trailer into town to pick up a load of furniture - my sister has had to move from a retirement village into a nursing home, and the family is clearing out her unit. Got a call last night to go in again on Sunday to get the rest. The first load included a sofabed, dressing table, table, sideboard, chairs, double mattress. Couldn't take the bed as we didn't have a set of Allen keys to take it apart. I imagine the next load will include fridge, freezer, bed, can't remember what else was left.
A niece of mine had a dual cab ute and a tandem trailer with a stock crate, but took mostly pot plants.

Took out the clutch pedal housing to replace leaking master cylinder.
Ended up stripping it, bit of lube, fresh lick of paint. New TRW master.c
Then found a low km puma salvaged pedal housing with the over center spring assist. So I will be putting that straight in with its genuine master.c which looks to be in good shape.
I have driven the newer pedal set up a few times and found it to be a little jumpy, with less control over clutch slip. A lighter pedal would be nice, so I probably wont miss the old set up, but keeping it on the shelf just in case!

I pulled the bottom off, pushed it up through the hole as far as it would go, then pushed the shaft of the top down into the hole.
I'm a bit embarrassed I didn't realise the bottom separated. After mine disappeared I couldn't remember how it had looked. It's one of those things you ignore until it breaks.

Although the Puma is up for sale I still give it a check over as we still use it. Today I put grease in the swivels and checked diff levels. Tomorrow I'll do the prop shaft greasing and wash it underneath.
I might be mad according to some people but I've always looked after my vehicles. Probably it started when I was a maintenance shift fitter many moons ago and had access to heaps of oil/grease etc. and no one watching........ you could have fried eggs with my engine oil it was so clean. :)

I have a auto AC guy looking at my AC later this week, he needed some info on the filter dryer/receiver, so I removed the LHS headlight and the power steering reservoir so I could see the numbers on the filter dryer.
removed the turbo outlet metal pipe, it needs some paint its rusting on the outside. I'd like to get a new one that doesn't have the crushed in section but after ringing around, i put that in the too hard basket.
I'll inform how the AC service goes and the cost.

Money goes fast there.Always thought ARB had good gear but sometimes going in there is like going into Dick Smith 30 years ago. Enthusiastic young people who often give misleading or just plan wrong advise. (Not unlike many places i suppose).
This view was reconfirmed on a recent visit to my local ARB shop, first time in over 15 years.

Hi guys, well it finally happened, its been on my gunna do list for a few years.
I had a mobile guy come around, and I did the prepation for him, and gave the description of the filter dryer-receiver, hoping it would be cheaper. I'm not sure how that worked out it , the service cost $200.
The filter dryer is behind the LHS headlight on my Tdi, ( and many other models i suspect), I removed the headlight before he came.
I also took the bolts out of the bracket for the PS reservoir so it can be moved aside.
And unbolted the filter dryer so it could be moved a little to get the spanners on oK.
The filter dryer is a generic 4 port one with the same dimensions as the one fitted, ( not sure if that was original makers equipment or not.) It looks like they are a common type, so not difficult to get.
Andy, the AC guy transferred the LP cutout, and gauge connection
 across.
Vacuum pumped down the system and added 1095 grams of R134a, (why not 1100 you ask?)
Ran the AC on full blast to check the head and suction pressure, all ok.
It was a mild day only about 26, the AC was cutting out after a few minutes, I had to open the windows so it would run continuously. Cooler inside than its been since since I left Victoria. :)
I had the grill and bug screen off just so I could get feel for the breeze created by the fan, the fan is moving a lot of air, and the head pressure was only about 14 bar.
cheers simmo

Finally got around to installing the Shingleback Sill Tank in my Defender 110. Just got to get around to filling it up to see what it holds....
I ended up installing a 2nd Filler just below the Passengers Door but using a 50mm size filler made it a bit more harder due to the short piece of hose required and the angles involved to mate them up, but I eventually got it to fit.... but I'm a bit concerned on the pressure I need to use to get the hose & fittings to mate up, so I'll be watching for any signs of fatigue on the filling point and the joint into the tank.... Time will tell though.... If I could have found a more flexible hose I think it would have made it easier but I went with what I could find....
Decided to go with a simple setup of just using a facet pump feeding back into the Main Tanks Breather hose as well as teeing the Aux Tank Breather hose into the Main Tank too. I decide not to install a Fuel gauge at this stage and will just switch the facet on and hopefully rely on the time it takes to pump 70ltrs across which should be around 30mins or so.....

I wish I had gone them sooner then spending an arm and a leg trying to make the factory ones work reliably.
Quick Question: Does upgrading to the LEDs circumvent any issues to do with the lack of headlight relay and need for uprated/higher gauge wiring?
JDNSW
14th February 2018, 08:19 PM
mwbrydon - no, it does not circumvent the issue, but enables you to get more light than the standard lights without exacerbating the issue.
Yesterday, going into town in temperatures in the low forties, the platic hubacp on the RH front wheel came loose and leaked oil all over the wheel.
The near new hubcap, at these temperatures (probably add a bit of heat from the brakes) is about as rigid as a plastic bag. However, on removing it and cleaning everything up, I find that the ridge that is supposed to hold the hubcap on is actually about 50% wider than the groove it slots into. Hence is unlikely to hold it by anything other than friction.
I located an old hubcap (I have a new one, but it was the same) that not only has the correct width ridge, and is much more rigid. Unfortunately, it is also slightly loose, so I assembled it with a line of Loctite No. 4 gasket sealant. Hopefully that will stay on and sealed.

Yes Kings and Konis.
Sorry, I can't remember the numbers, although I'd written them down somewhere. They are +50mm and +500kg's. The vehicle weighs around 3500kg's all up of which aprrox 2200 to 2300 is over the rear and it has this weight all of the time.

Removed the wheel, left it on the jack with the tyre under the steering guard and dropped it about 20mm so it was touching the tyre. Used a small screwdriver to push through the center pins from the clips that hold the guard. Popped off the whole flared arch. This only took 10 mins and was totally worth it. I should have done this when I first put the snorkel on.
From there: Snorkel off. Wingtop cover off. Undo airduct bracket. Cut up airduct (I used a sharp stanley knife as I wasn't keen to start waving the sabre-saw around in such a small space.) & remove. Disconnected hose from filterbox for better access. Cleaned everything up and assembled per instructions. Snorkel back on. About 4 hours.
Only comments: 1 - Black sealant would look better than the blue if you're a bit messy, like me. 2 - I didn't see the need to remove the airfilter box.
Wasn't as bad a job as I thought it would be. Gullwings next weekend....

What was your process for installing the nugget airduct kit? Got one sitting on a shelf to fit one day soonish.....
Printed instructions talk about removing the front wheel, wheel arch inner, etc.... Did you take any shortcuts?
No need of removing any thing to be honest. I even managed to pull the old piping without hacking into it. Just remove the supporting bracket for the existing pipework and stick your hand through the guard and gut it like a fish ;) ...literally. I installed the replacement box first then installed the pipework (bit of a fiddle but works). Sing out if you need a hand.
Many Thanks,
pd

Thanks for the kind offer of assistance. It doesn't look like a hard task at all - maybe rated 2 barked knuckles only. ;) If that goes up to 3 barked knuckles due to being too lazy to remove a road wheel and inner guard... no issue.

Ok job done. Fitted the nugget air box etc. Zero skinned knuckles. Didn’t pull any wheels or guards.
Got a question though - how did others route the 90mm tube? I couldn’t find a route that isn’t pressing on other things like brake lines etc.
Appreciate a photo if if you have this kit fitted. Thanks

New style is around 21 cm long, the old one was only 9 cm, new style is designed to eliminate fouling on the alternator bolt head which can occur on some installs

I can comment now on the results of the change in ducting from fender to air filter box - now that I have driven the vehicle (before/Saturday, after/Sunday).
Before I comment on the results of the changes - here is starting point, exactly what has changed and the purpose of the change.
Starting point:
- Vehicle has the BAS 170hp AB tune and larger intercooler. Has had for a few years now.
- Until Saturday evening the vehicle had the stock LR air intake duct from fender to airbox. No snorkel and no intention to fit one.
What changed:
- pulled out the stock air intake ducting from fender to air box, replaced with the Nugget Stuff product.
Reason for the change:
- Had been concerned that the stock air intake duct from fender to airbox could be a bit restrictive and Pete Bell did suggest some mods to the inside of the airbox to make that less restrictive with the 170 AB tune installed.
- (So had a vague notion of possible benefits to the engine of a less restrictive inlet to the airbox)
- The stock ducting also comes with paths for air to be sucked in through multiple gaps in that ducting under the bonnet.
- (So had a vague notion that it'd be better if the only path for air into the air filter box is from outside of the engine bay, via the grille in the fender - which I can also see/monitor from the driver seat if needed!)
Results:
1. From the driver's seat, with window down, can notice a nice new crisp edge to the induction noise at the air intake grille that wasn't there previously.
2. Definitely more "suck" at the air intake grille in the fender. So one of the above objectives have been achieved. Assumption proved - that only partial weak flow of air to supply engine needs ever passed that way previously.
3. Considering the need to add yellow/black hazzard stickers ajacent to air intake now (Advice needed - which of the attached examples would work best?)
4. Turbo clearly spools up faster as there is marked improvement in acceleration from a standstill
5. Throttle roll-ons in any gear with revs above 1800, show clearly noticeable improvement
6. Fuel consumption dropped 10%
7. Handling on twisty mountain roads improved markedly
8. Driveline backlash and clunks all virtually eliminated
9. The knocking/rattle in the B pillar gone!
10. All points after #2 above, i.e. points 3 to 10 are all clearly bull****.

Just to add: One job still to do:
- the way I have the 90mm tube is positioned right now provides a subtle downhill run from the nugget box attached to the inside of the fender, into the air filter box.
- got to smooth away a portion of the wheel arch inside the engine bay so I can pull the tube up higher, to give something of an uphill run for any water that may hit the intake grille.

wasn't really planning on it, but ticked a few items off on sunday:
Cleaned the MAF sensor, it threw an error last week, so we'll see...
Installed twin USB power outlet into the glovebox, nice and discrete.
 Installed the passenger gullwing.
installed a strip light just inside the gullwing, hard wired with a dimmer and yellow/white switchable to reduce the bugs.
Bought a waeco cfx50 as its a bit bigger & lighter than my old engel, plus side opening lid is really nice next to the gullwing

Tried taking pics, booster is firmly in the way of the camera. Mine has no kink however and nestles nicely between the booster and the guard. I did think about the lack of sump to catch water, you have more of a problem than I do. That said my sealed unit can still collect water through the hat.

I fiddled some more this afternoon. Pulled the 90mm hose well forward of the brake booster, kind of over the wheel arch inner. Still not as “uphill” from the box inside the front guard as I’d like. Might source another piece of the tube, a bit longer.
I still have the self draining bung inside the air filter box functional.

After fitting my sealed system from front guard to air filter box I did a quick test - covering the intake grille at the front guard to see how well sealed it was.
The 90mm duct tried to implode but the engine kept running. Didn’t test more as I got a bit sus about the standard hose that seems to go from the top cover of the engine to the air intake hose between air filter and turbo. Maybe blocking the air intake at the front guard would cause increased suction on crankcase and potentially expose the turbo to more oil than acceptable.
All purely speculative and something to validate one day.
Today I stumbled on this!:
Bas Remaps - I think I MUST be the first to go this in... | Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/BASREMAPS/posts/1184768911594741)
Interesting read!
”...So that is that then.. KBX and snorkels ARE restrictive and cause more vacuum draw on the crank case which is the nearest point to the turbo inlet and without a shadow of doubt can con tribute towards oil in the compressor housing of the turbo and a difference in power to a non snorkel car.”

Hi Zeros. The Puma is a shorty and we usually use it around the Hawkesbury (home) and use the others for big trips out west. However we did do a run up to Glen Innes/Moree/Narrabri/Coonamble in it after Easter and it ran very well... had the Td5 from new (MY1999) and it is the easiest to drive on and off road. She’s pulled plenty of black wattles out on the farm over the years.

I have owned a few other 300Tdi’s over the years including an ex Calvert expedition (1996) 130 ‘tucker truck’ which was brilliant and great for towing horse floats and carrying all the crap that you need with horses. Nothing wrong with them at all, but the Td5 has more power and can be chipped. Mine has mild chip and acceleration is quicker than the Puma :-). Love them all

Land Rover Double DIN dashboard fitted | Landroverweb.com (http://www.landroverweb.com/landrover/land-rover-double-din-dashboard-fitted/)
For the first time in defender ownership i have inbuilt GPS navigation, no need to have a audio jack from my phone to the headunit to play music, podcasts and audiobooks and hands free phone use (only tested when stationary. I expect at hwy speed it will be an annoyance to the other person). One thing i did notice is my FM reception is worse with this unit compared to the ancient headunit that was in it.
I fitted a generic plug for power and speakers into the factory harness just in case i have to change units in the future. I did have a head scratch trying to work out what the white cable is for that attaches to the bracket between the 2 vents. The only thing that my imagination concludes is the remote key antenna.
One Tip - there is a reverse light trigger pick up at the engine harness plug adjacent to the heater tap (green/brown wire)

I went with a Kenwood unit about $700 (last year's model).
Sorry no photos. That article is all you need re photos. I was struggling with the birds nest behind the dash illuminated primarily with a head torch. With a looming holiday deadline i'm working on it at night after work. There was a tip from someone else to use a hot air gun to push down the air vents for the head unit to fit. I removed the metal bracket and whacked the mount with a hammer for the head unit to fit. Another tip, the orange/dark orange wire (i vaguely recall as i sit 50km from the car) on the factory pug is the illumination trigger which most head unit now have. When the head lights turn on the screen is dimmed.
The rear camera is one from Jaycar bit pricey at $110 but it has LEDS and great night vision. The camera uses a 4 pin video lead that i ran to the dash and used an adaptor to split the video from the power. The front camera is one that came with the Kenwood (CMOS). I drilled a hole in the number plate and mounted it. It should give me vision when you are on the precipice and the track is below your line of sight. Also when trying to park a 130 and the rear of the car in front is lost below your line of sight. My experience those small car owners don't appreciate my touch (with bull bar) parking technique.
Other presents for the D130: BAS remap (yet to load) and a GAP diagnostic tool (yet to receive). Will remove the rear seat box and fit an 85 ltr water tank on the floor. New turbo (old one has a sticky waste gate and over boosts) and i will remove the entire EGR system and re-route or plug the hoses. I see no point in adding heat from the exchanger to the cooling system and i'm yet to come across a mechanic that inspects the back of the engine block for Rego. If i was dedicated i'd replace the EGR exchanger with a water heating exchanger for showers but i'm not that fussed and the wife travels with me only in a blue moon when pigs are flying backward.

I bought 5 new tyres for my 300 Tdi project vehicle, but the tyre shop was unable to balance the wheels as the centres in the Dynamic rims (which were on the vehicle when I bought it) are about 1/2 an inch wider than the standard Defender rim and they didn't fit their balancing machine.
This photo is with the Dynamic rim on the 300 Tdi.
141340
and the second is my Td5 on standard rims (they are both running heavy duty axles and hubs) and it is quite clear the Dynamic's are bigger.
141339
The guy at the place said that 90% of tyre fitting places would not have the larger attachment to enable balancing these.. This surprised me as was the fact he didn't have the attachment as this was a large and busy tyre business with lots of 4WD's coming and going.
However driving the 40kms home after the fitting with unbalance wheels, all seemed fine though I would certainly like to get them balanced.

New battery in.
I choose Varta H3. Price 390$
It's of exact same dimensions as the factory battery, with 10 ah more capacity at 100ah
Also I find out the factory battery in my puma defender is actually a deep cycle lead acid...CCA 800 90ah.
Code is lfd 90. Made by Varta
In many ways, I think It make sense to have a deep cycle battery with enough CCA in a off-road vehicle. At times you will have power consumption and run the battery really low....E.g. bogged in a mudhole at night with light bar on.....Waiting for help.....

Getting ready to pull the trigger on one of those too.... they are out of stock now and for the past several weeks. Its not an urgent priority for me right now, I will be waiting for something to break (LT230, MT82, or clutch) before it gets fitted - just want it on hand so there is no "waiting for parts" delay when the time comes.
[edit]: Just asked DPL to organise some HD rear half shafts and drive flanges too. Will get those fitted next service in a few weeks time.

spent the morning searching for a SCV and PRV that can supply in 24 hrs. Eventually sourced the parts from a Ford dealership. Been nursing a truck that is over fuelling and running rough. At idle it sounds like a tin bucket of bolts on top of an vibrating pad. The fumes are enough to spike the CO2 levels. The cascading problem solving is bringing me to a state of hatred for the old girl. Then when you think you hit rock bottom the mechanic says why not a toyota and all of a sudden i'm all defensive of the old girl. Started with a new turbo that was over boosting and removal of the EGR that was causing it to go into limp mode. As soon as i fixed that i get a fault for a fuel pressure relief valve which also throws it into limp mode. Once your PRV is triggered it needs to be replaced. Been warned that a faulty PRV often means a faulty SCV too. Well at least in my head no point putting a band aid on the problem and potentially leave the cause unattended to. All this in less than a week out from a 5 week outback Oz trip. Who needs this sort of drama on the eve of a big trip

FYI - Long Ranger will sell a HD version that has a second skin (total 6mm of steel) welded to the bottom for an extra $150. If you have the Puma the usable capacity is 120ltr. the ECU goes into limp mode before the final 7ltr is usable. I'm looking into changing the car configuration with my diagnostic tool to 80ltr so the ECU thinks there is an extra 5 ltr in the tank postponing the limp mode to access the final 7ltr. If you don't mess with the fuel pick up you will get about 95km from light to limp mode.

In the beginning I thought what they mean is I will be carrying a dead weight of 7lt diesel. But seems those fuel is still usable. It's there and will still be picked up. It's just the ECU will put the truck into limp mode.
So presumably, the limp mode will improve fuel efficiency? Otherwise.....

Sent it to DPL for 75k km service.
Gotta give a huge call out regards Bruce Davis' great attitude towards customers - Bruce ordered in HD rear axles & flanges for me, at my request, but then talked me out of replacing what I had, as it wasn't really needed, hardly any slop/wear in what I had. I didn't want to leave Bruce stuck with the stock, but he wasn't worried - likes to keep a set in stock etc... What a great bloke! He could have just shut up about my gear not needing replacement and just taken my money.
BTW - I still have the original LR axles, but had fitted Ashcroft HD flanges a few years ago at about 18k km and kept them nicely greased up at intervals ever since. At the time this removed a LOT of the driveline slop I had been experiencing, clearly the original flanges were worn more than the original axles. I had asked Bruce to do the HD axle/flange replacement thinking that this is likely where some added new slop in the driveline had crept back in over the years. i.e. Had expected that the stock axles would not have lasted so well even with Ashcroft HD flanges and grease - but seems they are ok.
Front diff pinion seal had been leaking for some time, so it got a bit of loving attention too. Rego is coming up in a few weeks and I suspect I'll be asked to get the vehicle inspected before rego renewal, so fixing leaks now is timely.
Bruce also picked up an exhaust leak around the cat pipe and fixed that for me nicely, won't be having any cat problems in future.

Since getting the 110 up and running after a 3 1/2 yr rest in the shed, it's costing a small fortune with more to spend in the next few months.
✔️New alternator. Playing up after sitting around.
✔️30 second awning (similar to the one Numpty fitted)
✔️Traxide head/spot light wiring upgrade. I was a bit short of heavy duty cable (unsure why, but I did mount the relays on the RHS guard) but happy with kit supplied.
✔️couldn't afford LED headlights so when with the Narva 72002, a halogen bulb lenses setup with a free form rear reflector. Had Trucklight LEDS but too much dead space without light. Only realised I have WIPAC lenses once I bought the Narvas. So now need to work out if I put the LEDS or WIPAC into my Mark 2 cortina project.

Windscreen having been replaced recently, refitted the trim on the LH side of the windscreen - properly. Checked that the bolts holding the RH side of the A-frame pivot to the chassis were still tight - I found them loose in the last service (and that got rid of the noise at the back I could not find!).
Another interesting noise I found and fixed recently, which I thought was a tappet or possibly a loose timing gear, turned out to be the throttle cable from the aftermarket cruise control vacuum unit tapping against the inner mudguard.

when i fitted the LR tank i wanted to see what range until empty (limp mode). I have 8% lower gearing and adjusting for the usual 5% inaccuracy in the Odo the actual kms from light to limp mode is about 93Km. If you are running 33" rubber the Odo is pretty accurate. What you say is not quite correct and i take blame for the misleading description. When mine went into safety mode i was on a stretch of road that i couldn't pull over so drove for about 700 to 900m to pull over. When the low fuel safety feature kicks in the engine hesitates in a rude way and does it every 300m odd. From my reading of the RAVE it will shut down at some point and you can restart to proceed. I didn't understand the RAVE to imply limp mode ie 5km/hr with capped RPM like you get with a system fault ie EGR failure. I haven't tested it past shut down (nor have any interest except in an emergency). You would have to be a desperate man to be push through the hesitation and shut down to access the 4 ltr in the 'theoretical' swill tank that the ECU is working on then also the 7 ltr in the bottom of the tank due to the larger surface area compared to the factory tank. The up shot for the 2.4 is no pick up pump therefore no burning it out if you run dry, but at $2400 for a genuine high pressure fuel pump, that's expensive desperation.

Hi Rob,
I get asked this a lot.
We pretty much live out of the back door pockets, keeping all our go-to stuff (tie downs, torches, lights, gloves, pooping kit, towels, toiletries, cups, plates cutlery etc etc) in there to avoid rummaging about in the back. This set up, combined with the gullwing access to the fridge suits us super well.
The bottom one is from tuff-trek in the UK, it's top notch.
The top one i sketched up and got made by a canvas guy. We made it to suite, cups plates, cutlery etc. I riveted some alum sail track (bunnings) at the top of the door and a rope edge in the top of the organiser. The bottom is just 2 brass eyes and those little plastic toggle things riveted to the car.
i have attached a better photo and the sketch i sent the guy.

At this stage I am looking at rebuilding with a new set of pistons.

Pressed “go” on orders for Traxide combo headlight wiring upgrade and Ashcroft centre ATB. Both are pre-emptive strikes:
- Want to avoid headlight switch leaving me in the dark some future day.
- Want to ensure I have the ATB on hand for whichever future date might see gearbox dropped. Have a fair bit of slop back in driveline and suspect the spud shaft. If that lets go, will have the transfer box opened up and centre diff replaced with the Ashcroft beastie.
Edit: How fast is that.. ordered the centre diff/ATB from Ashcrofts on Friday evening my time (before midday their time)... and it was delivered at 7.30am this (Monday) morning my time!

I cant believe the prices of floor matts! I just bought some heavy duty ribbed rubber off the roll at the big green shed. Cut to fit. Going strong after 85,000kms. Looks ok too.

Had KLR fit one of their Isuzu turbo kits [bigsmile]. In deference to my ute's 620k kms, Brad agreed to a milder tune than their standard settings. Even so, I'm very pleased with the result. With the camper etc, the ute is 3tonnes plus and I'm usually down to 3rd and 70-80km/hr on a couple of hills heading back to Canberra but post turbo I'm easily doing 105 with more to come. It's also had the benefit of smoothing out the occasional clutch shudder I had when accelerating from a standstill and cleaned up the bit of exhaust smoke I had under load. Engine is smoother and quieter too.

About 99% finished the stage-2 of the rear of my Defender - converting the rear storage/drawer setup I had to a setup that I can now sleep in but also still be able to pick up the kids from school if req'd. Managed to use some of my previous drawer setup as well, so that kept the cost and time down....
Now, I've just got to go for an overnighter somewhere to test it out :)

I've got some photos with the self inflating mat and sleeping bag on top and myself at 6' I can comfortably fit. The Front platform has the 25x25 ally boxing screwed around the edge of the platform and then I simply made another vertical section out of ally that snugly fits in between the frame bolted to the platform. When needed the vertical leg simply folds back up into between the ally frame under the platform and I can then slide it back into the rear and then lift the seat up so the 3 kids can sit in the back. Hopefully these photos may help.... If they don't I can get some better ones

On Tuesday, when I went to town, I flashed my lights to greet a Defender coming the other way - and the multifunction switch went all floppy and it stayed on high beam. On Wednesday I ordered a new switch, which arrived this morning.
So I proceeded to pull the dashboard apart and remove steering wheel and the steering column shroud, after disconnecting the battery. Then remove the light switch, leaving it hanging, and then the wiper switch, leaving it hanging. Then simply disconnect the plug, loosen the clamp screw and lift off the multifunction switch. Haha!
It took two goes with WD-40 and forty-five minutes to get the plug undone.
Fitting the new switch was quick and simple, a bit more with three fiddly screws fitting the wiper switch - then as I was starting to fit the light switch something did not look right (see picture). Take it all off again for a closer look. This revealed that one of the fixed contacts in the switch, I think, high beam, was floating round loose.
Of course, by this time the supplier has gone home for the weekend. Needless to say, the new switch was in a box clearly labelled "Lucas"!
Not happy! Looks like the 2a into town next week.

The supplier of the Switch has just agreed to send me a replacement - they asked the question "Was it a Lucas Part"!
All I could say is that it came in a Lucas box, but on closer examination, it actually has Lucas on the part as well, although it is easily overlooked, as the colour used is low contrast on the cadmium plated frame of the switch.

Fitted replacement switch to the County, and then replaced the fuse that was apparently a casualty of the switch failure. All seems to be working now.
But it is so long since I have had the steering column shroud apart that I had forgotten what a pain it is! And also forgotten that you have to get the top bit in position first.

Finally got around to buying and fitting a new radiator in the old girl. The last one I fitted was back in late 2001 when I rebuilt the motor onto a 4L cross-bolted block. This was started 3 weeks ago, had some issues with stripped bolts on the thermostat housing, then getting it to seal again as the recess for the thermostat to sit in was corroded and the thermostat kept falling out.
Sealed it all up the other day after a major leak from the thermostat housing and ran it up to temp and.... no leaks!
Took it for a run last night and it is running sweet.

New wiper blades too! (85000km not bad). Didn't wash it though! Adventure today: picked up some mulch and firewood in the trailer. flawless performance all day. enjoyed every minute of the drive. It rained and the wipers worked. Newish Kumho AT tyres are excellent. the dog loves jumping in the back. took him for a run in a paddock. reluctantly parked Defender back in drive-way and unloaded wood. Now dropping the oil out of the diff's, transfer and gear box and hoping to get them refilled before the rain comes!

How'd you do that, AM? The panel that holds the instruments was cut to shape out off 6mm plate the holes cut with a holesaw and the recess for the gauges bored 4.5mm deep .A 55mm strip was then formed and tacked around the edge and trimmed to shape .The top ,front and bottom piece was formed with three folds and the passenger side folded at 90 deg to form the end.The drivers side is a little more complicated so a piece was made and welded in .The shape off the first panel was cut out and tacked in place. The whole lot was then welded fully dressed up and sand blasted as seen in pic.I then painted with crinkle paint but got a bit impatient and tried to install after 24 hours[bigsad] where 36 hours is needed before handling .finished up damaging the paint .Any way looked ok so decided to paint the binnacle around the steering I made for the Toyota switches last year

Traffic was unusually heavy, but pretty well behaved (double demerits?). Saw a few Discoverys of various age, none returned my wave. One Defender, who did return my wave (actually I think he started first!). Saw one police car, going the other way, but there were said to be a lot of unmarked cars about..
No incidents or issues, except partof a road I don't use that often is getting badly corrugated, and there is a noise, which, if it wasn't something inside, I need to check. County is running well.

Long story short bit the bullet and removed the rocker cover. The attached images show what I found. The noise turned out to be the injector rocker hitting the rocker cover. Spring has fractured and other components then failed. No other apparent damage other than the injector adjusting screw. I have located all the remains of the components and have fished extensively with a magnet for any remaining metallic debris. In order to free up some dollars for other (more necessary) things, I decided to part with my beloved Rijidij bull bar. I removed it for later sale, and today I re-fitted my original defender bumper.
I decided, despite not really loving the look, to mount the driving lights to the defender bumper. I ended up putting them immediately below the headlights, which I suppose is a bit different, but it made it easier for me to reach everything during installation. (There is a support bracket welded into the bumper on each side of the mounting bolt holes, and I had to ensure enough space on the inside of the bar for the driving light mounting bolts and a decent diameter flat washers to help brace it all up).
Please excuse my poor photography with my aging and very dirty iPhone camera...

Initial bite, total retardation and quite importantly, release all vary.
Release on tyres with relatively minimal traction and no ABS is really important so you can modulate the pedal.

Tdi's are notorious for destroying lash caps and the resultant debris doesn't affect overall wear.

Took the family into the Brindabellas for an outing today. Discovered that my drivers side rear mudflap was hanging a tad off kilter. At first I thought I'd lost the top nut off the bolt that attaches the outboard side of the bracket to the panel. Turns out a triangular chunk of panel had just cracked off, with nut and bolt still in place.
Didn't have any particularly good bits and pieces on hand, so I used some tin snips to cut a little section out of the lid of an empty jar. I laid it across the gap, with a stainless washer on each side of it and reattached the nut. Won't win any beauty contests, but it's pretty solid.
I suppose I should try and replace it with something more suitable, but it's ok for now.

Installed a Headlight/Driving Light Loom Upgrade (about 12 months ago).
Before last Christmas I installed the loom upgrade but have procrastinated in posting. I have seen how Jon installed his (see post:  Alasdair, the MY16 Keswick 110 (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/members-rides/236135-alasdair-my16-keswick-110-a-9.html) ) but thought I'd stick to the recommendations from Traxide for now by installing on the L/H side. There really isn't much space under the bonnet so I had to jerry rig the mounts on top of each other. Suffice to say everything works and getting it in was ok (albeit a real fiddle) but I'm dreading the 10.00pm light malfunction fiddle - probably in the rain - by the side of the road in the middle of no where. Anyway, pics below;

As you can see below it is still tight for access/fiddling. I'll ponder the install over Christmas and see if I can come up with a better place for the relays. I'd really like to install under the drivers seat or in a box under the dash (preferred I suppose) but am conscious of extending the wiring too much. When I relocate the relays I'll relocate the wiring from under the seat into the ExBox. Before I do that though I need to invest in a decent set of crimpers. Using the side cutter cutters for crimping has go knobs on it. Any way, more install pics below. Special thanks to Penny the Lab for the supervision. (she sat there for hours watching. Dropping screws in and around the lights (behind the bullbar) was a total bi**h hence the taped on screws. Once the screw dropped into the bar it was a real job to locate and retrieve them.
I also want to fit a snorkel and do something about the music situation. Neither really bother me that much and the snorkel is more for aesthetics at the moment). Because of where the relays for the lights are fitting breathers will be a problem I think.

Made up a little bar table for the back of the 110 to complement the table on the drawer. Was inspired by another user on here who had a similar mechanism but had a hinged leg.
Wanted mine to be able to slide in flat on my drawer under my gear and so it uses a cantilever design in the ladder rungs. Can't see in this pic (as did not have the wire on) but has two hooks at the license plate end underside that are connected by a tense wire rope looped under the bottom rung meaning it doesn't need the wire rope shown (although will use as safety if ever cook on it!)
Pretty happy with how it came out and means can leave the camp table at home for smaller trips. With both wires on held my weight (80kg) no problems for a quick test.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181203/40be8ecfb54df00921c7363bf77bb4fe.jpg

Hi Carpdvl,
Mind telling me what the wheels are on the vehicle.
I have a set of Sawtooth's and am thinking of swapping out for a set of black steel wheels (Sunraysia's etc).
Cheers,
Andrew
