on my 4x4 '88 Perentie, I find that when I switch to low range from high or from high to low, and start moving, after about 30 seconds to a minute, the range level, pops back to neutral. Is this dumb operator syndrome or is there some trick to this?

Sounds as if you are not getting it engaged properly. This could be eitther, as you suggest, 'operator error', or it coulod be either something such as ther boot, interfering with the lever movement, or a problem with the linkage between the selector fork and the lever, usually a clamp bolt loose.

Rarely, it could be an internal problem.

I always hold slight pressure on the lever when changing to either high or low while pulling the clutch out, I still hold pressure and back off on the accelerator and most time you can feel it fully fully engage.

While drivers book says you can do high and low transfercase changes on the move I dont recommend it.
The drive dogs for the high--low and the gear bearings on unmodified transfercases are not a Mr Landrovers strong point and dont like it if the

Transfercase lever is forced or the gear crunched if the operator missing the gear change.
Safer to nearly stop and a change transfercase ratio and as Weeds indicated keep a light pressure on the lever to ensure its home after a 100mtrs or so.
The transfercase shift forks can bend or loosen up on the shafts preventing full engagement if someone has been heavy handed in the vehicles previous life.

Not sure what TC you have?? but if LT230 has a ball and indent on the high/low that may have come loose??
