View Full Version : What starter battery for a 2014 3.0 D4

Hi
I am sorry this has been asked before but I need a bit of clarification

I reckon my original battery is showing signs of going and am looking at replacement options.

I have searched the forum and there does seem consensus that the Varta G14 is a good option with a CCA of 850 and AH of 95.

However I note else where in the form people stating the D4 needs 900 CCA so would the above be big enough then.

Also can anyone tell me the size of the original LR battery, I am having trouble seeing the details ( I have not checked the handbook yet so RFM is a legitimate response :) )

Thanks in advance
Richa

What are the signs Rich?

My D4 is same age (2014) as yours but I've not detected any issues.
However, I'm planning a big trip this winter to the Simpson so very interested.

Thanks David, so the G14 is big enough.

i am sure I don’t have the details on the top of my battery. I will check but will not say as I would be to embarrassed if it is there as I have spent a lot of time chasing it down :)
Thanks Again

No worries Rich. The only reason I have that photo is that battery was a replacement installed under warranty last year.

My car mostly does short runs and the original was giving low battery warnings all the time. Dealer tested and replaced. Admittedly I could be more diligent charging it too.

I recently left my car idle for about 6 weeks (couldn’t drive- shoulder operation) and then the low battery warning popped up. No surprises there. It started ok but now I’m trying to rejuvenate it by charging. Not sure if it will work or not.

I’ve installed the Ctek battery sense monitors and this is the battery capacity/voltage graph from the app. The sharp upswings are charging with Ctek 5A charger. Will see how it goes...

I can’t leave my car for a week without getting the low battery warning.

Seems to be getting worse. I do put it on charge now and again to keep it going. I also have a traxide set up so the situation is probably worse than it appears. I monitor both batteries with a remote redarc monitor and note it loses at least .1v each day.

I had the battery checked last last year and plan to get it checked again.

i May get a bit more out of it, not sure. I am about to hit the road for a few months so want to be prepared.

Mine's a November 2013 D4 with the original battery and it still seems ok. We do 95% or more short trips of say 7kms. I put it on a CTEK charger occasionally say every couple of months. I've been wondering if and when it would die but so far so good. The voltage when starting looks ok. Fingers crossed for a few more years. [bigwhistle]

security system?

It isn't a D4, but if I leave my car in my garage unlocked its security system uses more electrical power than if I leave it locked.

In another thread someone mentioned that leaving the car double locked saves some juice as well as disconnecting the brake controller.

i normally double lock mine, Ie press the lock button twice, but have not tried disconnecting the brake controller yet.

i don’t need another battery today but it is an ongoing concern. At least I now know of a good option when the day comes.

Am I right in guessing that the same battery for the TDV6 would be fine for the V6 petrol?
My assumption would be the diesel version would simply have more "grunt" power. I'm running fine at present, but it is good to be prepared.

Mine gets short runs as well.
the biggest drain on mine is the Traxide SC80 relay.

I have a switch on it to turn it off,and the battery definitely lasts longer between charges.

That Ctek graph,is that battery capacity?

If so it is getting way too low,not good for battery life.

It's good to give a battery regular sessions on a multi-stage charger to keep it excited and reduce sulphur build-up. Mine gets a couple of 130km runs each week, but I still give it a burst on the charger every month or two.

And over a short period too.

Yes, the graph is battery capacity. Yes, way too low but I don't often have the opportunity to charge it until the weekend and most days it's 10k to work and 10k back so doesn't get much of a charge.

Interestingly even with those dips, I haven't had a low battery warning since the initial one when I first fired it up after being idle.

I have the Traxide DT-90 now and since seeing your post I am looking at how I will set up to switch it off.
