I'm asking a question for a friend, can anyone tell me how many splines there would be on a 1995 model 110 Defender steering shaft, as he wants to put a different steering wheel on his vehicle, he doesn't like the shape of the original wheel, he needs to know so he can get the correct boss, many thanks cheers Dennis

I would recommend a search of the forum, as this subject has been discussed a lot.

There is some information on Exmoor Trim website: Slimline Boss - Small - 70mm PCD | Exmoor Trim (https://www.exmoortrim.co.uk/slimline-boss-2821.html)

You will find this at the bottom of the page.

FITTING
Available in either 36 or 48 spline boss.

Land Rover were very inconsistent in their use of 36 & 48 spline steering columns. We recommend removing the steering wheel and counting the splines for guaranteed fitment. The below is for guidance only:

48 spline bosses were used on Defenders from 1993- 1998 or base spec vehicles from 1998-2008 and any Defenders from 2008 onwards. 48 spline boss will NOT fit County specification and all XS specification vehicles from 1998 to 2007. Will also NOT fit earlier Defenders from launch date up to 1993 regardless of interior spec.

For all options where a 48 spline boss will not fit purchase our 36 spline boss

As well as early models the 48 Spline Boss will also universally fit all post 2015 Defender. The boss has been cleverly design with slot to accommodate the revised indicator cancelator set up

Your attention is drawn to the bold sentence, as you can be surprised!

Cheers,

Lionel

Just remove the steering wheel.
With 21mm socket

Use the phone to take a photo of the spline and put it on TV zoom in and count.....

You never know unless you count it.....

Count the peaks and the troughs, add them together and divide by two.

I would count the splines down one side (from 12 o’clock to 6 o’clock (don’t include 12 o’clock)) and double it

Only takes half as much time [emoji12][emoji12]
