Can some one please tell me how many holes there are under the gutter trim on the lower part of the roof.

There is an easily seen rubber plug in each one, so count the plugs

I put short rails on mine, there were 3 each side. Obviously for long rails there would be at least one more each side. One thing to note is that if your car is a few years old, these holes may be a little rusty so I would recommend you tap the thread first.

Yes, the plugs. So 4 a side then for long rails.

So is that just one each side at the front ?

Correct. See this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMMrO41Rn0g) video from Powerful UK on how to fit the long rails.

Yes 3 on the raised part and 1 only on the front lower end. Today I put the backbones on for the Rhino rack and tapped out the holes first as they're full of paint. Makes life much easier when trying to get those bolts in.

Just a note.
The plugs on earlier D3s just push in but on my MY08 they screw in.
Worked that out after trying to pull the first one out as per YouTube video and snapping it off, leaving the threaded section in the hole.

Uh huh, that must be how they keep stripping the thread when fitting rails(dealer i assume). I was wondering how they managed that on what must have been a brand new car when mine were fitted.

I'm not the only one who has had to drill out and tap the old screws from factory roof rails when fitting a front runner/other new system that requires removal.

I like the idea of backbones but when fitted with the platform rack to our Colorado the wind noise was unbearable over 80 KPH.How are they on the Disco noise wise?

Actually I finished fitting the rack today and first job was to go up the tip and get rid of all the cardboard packaging...
As we didn't do over 80 being law abiding citizens we heard some wind noise but nothing excessive. The real test will come tomorrow on the freeway and later with a load on.
I have heard that the noise from racks flogged by OL can be horrid but have no personal experience of that.
We had a Rhino tray and roof bars on our 3 Defenders and a Prado and didn't get much noise from memory, nothing really excessive anyway.

Just a word about the quality of the Rhino platform I've just fitted. In a word "EXCELLENT". Yes "Made in China" is on the box but their quality control is obviously top notch and everything fitted as per the easy to read instructions.
Good price as well so we're very happy with it.

I find mine awfully noisy but I’m used to it now.

It's not bad at all Chris. At a 100 kay it's quite acceptable and I don't usually, especially if in convoy with the "tea and scones" club, go that fast.... :) Cross winds make it worse and we've had a fair bit of windy stuff lately.
