Hey all,

I tried using the standard wheel nut wrench on my D3 yesterday and found it very hard
to fit onto the wheel nuts. After talking to my indy, he quoted the known issue with using a rattle gun on
these and he suggested getting an aftermarket wheel nut wrench with a 22mm socket.

I did a quick search on google and eBay. Has anyone bought one of these that they would recommend?

TIA,
Randy

I actually find the LR wheel nut tool a lot easier to use as a normal socket grips the nut too tight and is a bugger to release the nut. Yours are perhaps seriously damaged if you find the LR tool is not working.

I have these and think they work well kincrome-4-piece-wheel-nut-impact-socket-set-met-1-2dr-k2180.html (https://www.gettoolsdirect.com.au/kincrome-4-piece-wheel-nut-impact-socket-set-met-1-2dr-k2180.html?gdffi=c5b8f06f736c40afa55474409bb4f069&gdfms=7A2F24AC60AE460A9BFF5412F73BC72E&gclid=Cj0KCQjwqYfWBRDPARIsABjQRYzv0vd8UtqjN-2exAvW28IH56jeVAMcdrkayUB7na83Esnh-osptowaAsbeEALw_wcB)

It does sound like your wheel nuts are damaged if the wrench doesn't fit properly.

I carry one of these extension handle wrenches & a 6-sided 22mm socket.
SCA, Repco, etc have them and when extended you get much better leverage than factory wrench.

Note that the 6-sided socket type is the key to not damaging wheel nuts.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/111.jpg

I've actually gone one step further and changed to solid wheel nuts to avoid even the potential of damaging the weaker original ones where the 22mm size is only a cap over a smaller nut.

Cheers,
Scott

Thanks, yeah I think they are damaged. I’ve found that same one at BCF so I’m going to look at getting that, I’m hoping it will at least fit the damaged nuts.

Thanks yeah the nuts I tried are definitely damaged. I want to try another wrench before I consider replacing the damaged nuts.

When tightening, are you using a torque wrench to get the specified/recommended torque setting?

I am trying to decide on one of those extension bars like above or a torque wrench or both!

Cheers.

I had this issue a couple of years ago. The integrated metal cover to the nuts become deformed. I bought a 23mm 6-sided deep socket as well as a 600mm long handled 1/2” breaker bar from Repco to get them off.

Replaced them with new nuts sourced from LRDirect in the UK (using the proper 22mm size socket - only six sided - avoid the 12 sided sockets). Getting the nuts from the UK was considerably less expensive than sourcing locally.

I also purchased a Warren & Brown torque wrench from Blackwoods to ensure nuts were torqued properly. Have not had an issue since.

I don't get it ...

Replace the nuts, they are obviously screwed....simple!

For years I used the LR wrench ... including numerous wheel changes to the GOE 18"s....no issue!

I then bought a 6 sided, 4 way combination wrench from an auto-barn type store ... colour coded the 22 end.....no issue.

I'm relatively strong but not a big bloke and I just incrementally cross-torque when doing the nuts up, until firm....two D4s since 2010 .... no issue. Nuts are always relatively easy to get off and have never been unduly tight nor loose. LR or the 4 way fits every time, so I've obviously never compromised the nut.

I do clean and grease the studs with a high quality grease every time I change the wheels. I do also clean and grease the interface between the wheel and the car side.

That is not going to end well, you are more likely to make the situation worse. Put it down to experience, replace the nuts and get a better wrench.

I have both. The extension handle wrench is ideal to undo nuts but I prefer to finish the tightening up by torque wrench.
However around town I don't bother carrying the torque wrench because the wrench is good enough until you get home to check torque.

Thanks I will do that, but I got to get the nuts off first. Hence looking for a wrench that will fit. I might just get my indy to do it as he has it for a couple of days to replace the radiator.

If you are replacing them and have the replacements with you then hammering on the socket then hammering it off once removed, then discarding is easy enough.

I carry a long 3/4" drive ratchet, short extension, and the socket. No problems. I don't carry a $100 torque wrench in the car but if I have to change a tyre then I torque it at home when the repaired tyre goes back on.

You might also look at an imperial socket size when you go to hammer one on, as the 23mm may be too big. Just use whatever is the closest. 7/8” maybe....

A good solution when you get the old nuts off is to replace them with solid wheel nuts. I got my set from the USA on Ebay.

I'm no expert but I don't think those will work - shank(?) should be longer.

I bought these: 20 Chrome 14x1.5 Lug Nuts for Land Rover Factory Aluminum Wheels - Mag Seat | eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/20-Chrome-14x1-5-Lug-Nuts-for-Land-Rover-Factory-Aluminum-Wheels-Mag-Seat-/142133305427?cp=1&sojTags=bu%3Dbu&bu=43180735328&euid=e7830e077cd74201a9d6ed5d5bd5bd80&nma=true&si=lwQIEMqQSyntT4Xxxj1fl8Olnfc%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557) but they seem to be not available currently.

These are similar: Set of 20 Chrome Wheel Lug Nuts M14x1.5mm for Land Rover LR3 LR4 Range Rover | eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Set-of-20-Chrome-Wheel-Lug-Nuts-M14x1-5mm-for-Land-Rover-LR3-LR4-Range-Rover/192445549035?hash=item2ccea609eb:g:EeIAAOSwhaNadLi m)

Likewise the ones I got don't seem to be on Ebay anymore but here is the seller I got them from (looks to be the same place in one of the links above)

dpaccessories | eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/m.html?_odkw=wheel+nouts&_ssn=dpaccessories&_armrs=1&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2046732.m570.l1311.R1.TR11.TRC1.A0.H0.Xlu g+nuts.TRS0&_nkw=lug+nuts&_sacat=0)

plenty of choices in here.

I only paid $46 for "20 Chrome 14x1.5 Lug Nuts for Land Rover Factory Aluminum Wheels - Mag Seat" which I think is also linked above but I don't see them on Ebay now. Might pay to shop around to see who else has them at the right price.

Wheel brace or spanner !

Once upon a time the only wrenches were 'tension wrenches (not torque wrench, another Americanism) and monkey wrenches, everything else were spanners, either ring, open ender, tube, etc

Next thing people will be taking about 'box wrenches' (ring spanners) and 'flat wrenches' (open enders)

/rant

I feel like King Canute but I have to try......

Second the motion to use a tension wrench on wheel nuts. First time I changed a wheel on my series3, (many years ago), did the nuts up to about car tension. Traveled about three Kms before I felt a vibration, wheel nuts had come loose. Very quickly found correct setting for nuts. Also, if you have a mystery vibration, sometimes it can be cured by tensioning wheel nuts to the correct setting, rather than what the gorilla with a rattle gun has set them to.

I have Never used a tension wrench to tighten a wheel nut in my life and I have Never lost a wheel because the wheel nuts have come loose either.
I normally just tighten up the wheel nuts after I have changed out a flat and them re checked them a couple of times afterwards. Using a decent breaker bar instead of using the useless factory supplied wheel brace is the trick [thumbsupbig]

Its amazing how little effort it takes to get to 140Nm with a 600mm bar.

I can kinda torque to feel now (if I have to), with an extra nip for safekeeping [emoji14] then tighten to spec with the torque wrench when possible.

I've actually gone one step further and changed to solid wheel nuts to avoid even the potential of damaging the weaker original ones where the 22mm size is only a cap over a smaller nut.

I carry one of these with me, I use the handle extended for ease of undoing but in the closed mode for tightening, which has always been plenty of leverage & no hassles with nuts coming loose. I carry a impact socket for its strength & six sided construction.
