View Full Version : 6x6 kerb weight: Ambo vs GMV- is the GMV a fattie?

Hi, I'm a new member looking to buy a 6x6 for trips to the Kimberley and for desert crossings. I have used 110's in the Tanami desert and in Africa for mineral exploration and love the ride. I am interested in the Ambulance and the General Maintenance vehicles as the fibreglass modules look very amenable to a camping conversion. I note on the REMLR.com website that the GMV kerb weight is a tonne heavier than the Ambo, so payload is only 1 tonne, not 2. Is this due to the internal steel cabinets, benches etc in the GMV? Stripped out for a conversion, would the Ambo still be lighter?

Any advice on the best 6 x 6 body for a camper would be much appreciated, at the moment I am interested in the GMV as the side opening doors give good access into stoves, fridges etc, plus they make a convenient awning.

Cheers,

Mike.

PS, I posted these queries last week but they seem to have evaporated into the ether, apologies if I am duplicating a thread here.

I seem to remember responding to a similar question last week. I think it was on the facebook page.

My understanding is the fibreglass modules are rather heavy. Maybe building a custom pod on a bare chassis or tray would come in lighter.
There is a fellow (Peter Blake) on here and the Perentie facebook pages who did a very good camper modifying a IIMV.

You can get some great ideas here.

One of my acquaintances has an ex ambulance with a luxury fibreglass slide-on that fits either on the back or on his tandem trailer. The Perentie completed the Canning Stock Route last August. Needed a little help on some of the really tough sand dunes, but otherwise fine, except for the time he didn't put down one of his gullwing side cupboards and found a tree - ouch! Apparently taking off the original heavy steel rear is the best step 1.

Thanks, the Canning Stock Route is on my Radar, so I want to keep it fairly light. Slip-ons could be a good option - big tray space available....
