Bullbar and front suspension

Hi,

I'm thinking of finally shelling out for a bullbar for my Disco TD5 and want to know if I must also consider upgrading at least my front suspensions? I'm looking at an ARB Sahara bar which apparently weighs 60kg, can my standard springs cope?

My honest sugestion would be to replace the suspension, while you can get away with the standard set up, you will bottom out alot more and ultimately have the potential for premature failure of components.

If you are going to fit a winch as well then you will definitely have to replace the front set up.

careful of going up too high. Even a 50mm lift can cause probs with the front propshaft failing early. Go the lift but put some $$ into upgrading the uni's to greasable on the front shaft at the same time.

I have found no need to redo the front suspension with a Sahara bar and a warn 9000lb winch. I have found no dramas with ground clearance or performance due to sag :wink:

I have a TJM steel bar with a 9000lb winch. I reckon it's robbed me of only 5mm but I will be doing a 50mm lift anyway pretty soon.

ARB managed to get a 50mm lift with OME suspension on my D2 and I have had no problem with any unwarranted ware. It drives a lot better and handles the extra weight with a long range fuel tank at the rear and a full steel bull bar at the front.

I dont agree that the standard springs will be sufficient as they are progressive and find difficulty in coping with the increased load further away from the axle centre.(inertia) 8O

eg: you have 60kgs further out and the progressive spring rate finds it difficult to turn around and send skywards after hitting a dip.

my recomendation is that you install "PinK" rangie springs purchased from from Les Richmond in victoria. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

The measurements are from the wheel arch to the centre of the axle
(Factory)

Then put "Polyairs" In The rear and your nice spring rates wont be upset.
