Should the air filter get wet with a snorkel fitted?
Whilst changing air filter noticed it was slightly damp and could tell it had been wet at some stage, is this normal with snorkel.

Some can get through driving in heavy rain , especially if the drain ports on the head are blocked
If it was after a creek crossing you have a leak

No creek crossings in last 10 thousand unfortunately

The only way water can get into the air cleaner on a properly fitted snorkel is via the head of the snorkel so Rain is the obvious answer unless you have accidently given the air intake a squirt with the hose when washing the truck down.
You can get those snorkel socks to fit over the head of the snorkel, these stop a lot of the rain, bugs and dust getting into the airbox.
You can even use a normal sock impregnated with light oil and a couple of zip ties to do the job [thumbsupbig]

.......... [emoji1375]not quite right! what about the airbox duckbill valve thingy that drains into the wheel arch. If its missing or damaged that’s a way for water from tyre spray to be drawn into the airbox. It happened on mine and i replaced it with a 38mm diameter rubber tube cap from the big red and green shed. Comes in a pack of 4 and i carry the remaining 3 as spares.

When a snorkel is "Correctly" fitted that drain in the bottom of the airbox is sealed up and water cannot get in that way, As is the small webbing fitting that runs from the snorkel to the airbox [thumbsupbig]
Not much point in fitting a snorkel if there is a hole left in the system lower than the snorkel head.

I have had a couple of forum members having wet filters, but that was from driving in torrential rain with the snorkel inlet facing forward sucking it in.

All true of course trout1105 and the OP is advised to check that the snorkel is “correctly” installed.

NB: in my case i got an airbox full of soupy mud during a 4x4 training course at Mt Cotterell near Melbourne (for those that know the place) and that spurred me on to install my snorkel [emoji1360]

What make of snorkel? The cheaper ones may not have a large enough vertical slash in the head. Rain water can enter and is meant to drain out of these slits.

No help with the wet filter but what are the recommendations on which way to face the snorkel head.
Forwards? Sucks in more rain, bugs & crap.
Backwards? I thought (maybe incorrectly) would cause a vacuum & suck in more dust?
And would it get enough air facing backwards?

Snorkel is a Sherpa 4x4.
I would expect a lot of water to get in I suppose as the only bits to get let out would be the water that actually hits the back of the head?
I leave it forward facing but may turn around on rainy days

The "burper" in the air filter box is supposed to close under vacuum , then let the water out when the engine is turned off so could be a bit counter productive to silastic them..
I recently bought a new one as they seem to open up a bit over time.
As said before it helps to increase the size of the slots in the head of cheapo snorkels and clean them of dead bees every couple of months..
Having said that I have had damp filters from rain but they soon dry out with the air flow through them. They might even improve performance with a bit of water injection.LOL.

Safari snorkel has slits in it so the water won't get down to the filter.A look on their site describes how it works.
I had one on the D2a for years and never had an issue,in torrential rain like we get here in QLd,or creek crossings with water well over the bonnet.

The main issue with the D2 airbox is the design is crap and air bypasses the filter.

.... re air bypassing the filter? Some brands of filter fit better than others [emoji6] i have no problems.

The design of the airbox is just fine, Just don't use cheap and nasty air cleaners/replace them on a regular basis and you won't have any problems [thumbsupbig]

Thats probably one of the few brands i didn't use.

Eventually i went back to genuine, which was the best, but still some fine dust in top of airbox.

And that was over many years and 3 D2's.

The D2a was better, but only because it had a snorkel, therefore picked up cleaner air.

There were many threads on this issue, both on here and other forums.

Some owners used grease around the seal which helped.

The D4 is a much improved design, with a fantastic seal and nothing gets past it.

If worried about water and excessive dust you can get different heads like a cyclone type that spins the dust and water to the side of the snorkel head and settles in the bowl .

This is probably worth a look, the Donaldson head certainly looks the goods :) A friend of mine tells me that he can squirt the garden hose into the snorkel head and all is good. :wasntme:

These are used extensively on farm machinery and they are bloody awesome as far as stopping the dust getting into the system, Unfortunately they look bloody ugly on a 4WD.
