When I was going to the shopping center this morning. The clutch master cyclinder was leaking badly. And I was unable to select any gear. Called up the emergency service and they have tolled my car to the service center. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I've no fender for this weekend.... https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

They said to me that my fender will be ready by Monday. :?:

I have heard about the 90's trip. Is someone is going to organize it? I am very interested in that https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Phil, your 'Fender is new! Why does it need a new clutch master cylinder kit? Isn't it under warranty?

yap, my fender is 2 year old and has only done 37000km. (still under warrenty, but not for long)

I think it is a little bit early for the clutch master cylinder failure.

Cheers,

Greg

The dodgy clutch masters are generally only lasting about 40,000kms max in the fenders. It should only take them a couple of hours to change. Just make sure they change it and do not put a kit in as it will be leaking again quickly. See if you can keep the old one and get it re-sleeved at a brake and clutch centre in stainless steel, so when the warranty runs out you have a spare of decent quality ready. I am on the 3rd in my fender in 45,000kms. New one put in when only 5,00kms and a month of ownership under warranty.

Thanks for your advise CraigE.

I believe land rover did know this common problem on fender. But I don't think they are going to do something about it. As we are the "small" group of people in Australia.

Greg

Yep,
there are 3 well known problems with the Defenders that LR do not want to do anything about.
1: Wear on clutch master cylinders - anywhere between 20,000kms and 40,000kms on average. Should at least get 100,000kms if not more.
2: Dodgy injector harnesses leaking oil into looms. Should not happen at all.
3: Dodgy oil pump bolts, not loctited in. This is a farce and is a huge quality control issue.

I have had 2 out of 3 of these with the 3rd only being prevented by preventative maintenance. All at cost to me as car is out of warranty (first clutch maser cylinder under statuatory warranty).

This all sounds disturbingly familiar.

I have just had the clutch master cylinder in my 90 replaced for the third time. 8O

The first time was at about 1500km. That one lasted about 13000km and now I have just had that one replaced.

My 90 is a 2003 model and has only done just over 30000km so this has all been under warranty though. Wouldn’t it be nice though if they would just fix the problem once and for all.

But at least they have been able to fix this problem. Am still trying to get them to stop the all the leaks that I get in the rear cargo area every time it rains or when I wash it. :? :?

And then there is the loud annoying clunk from the drive train when starting off and in between gear changes that has come back again. They fixed it once before and are now trying to tell me that the noise is common in Defenders because of the free play in the driveline. :!: :!: :!:

I would like to get mine solved as well. Water just gets into everywhere.

Good luck on that Greg.

I hope that you have more success than I have had. My 90 was in at the dealership again just last week for two full days and now it leaks worse that ever before. 8O 8O 8O

Am taking it back again this week for them to have yet another attempt at getting right. :?

Here’s hoping anyway. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I'm on my third master cylinder and done 126,000kms 8O 8O

Get in Kimba the other day and there are the tell tale drips of this one on the way out. NOT HAPPY JAN!!!

Does anyone know what the actual problem is with the fender master cylinder? Does the Disco do the same? Perhaps this is something for teh tech forum?

Noddy,
The clutch master cylinders are cheap nasty units compared to most and this is why the chop out. The best alternative is to get on stainless steel lined. I also think that greasing the shaft etc in the grease LR recommends causes some problems. I did notice when I pulled my last one apart that there were hard sand like bits of grease. This would be detrimental to the seals. It also makes the brake fluid a horrible grey colour and seems to condensate water more. This time I used a spray on grease.

have a look at the splines on the axles....if they are dry(not greased) they
will wear out and give the clunk....mine were changed at 60,000kms......

Where do you think it is? I have a bit of a leak on my right foot too, but haven't spent any effort looking for it yet.

QUOTE

Where do you think it is? I have a bit of a leak on my right foot too[/b][/quote]to the right of the clutch master cylinder there is a
tall box looking thingy (think it houses the brake pedal assy)
on its sides there are 2 VERY loose gromets (bout 35mm round)
on mine there is stains from water? that go into these gromets. ive sealed them up. also where the box thingy sits looks like it will gather
water. so im gonna get in there with some sealant.

i'll try and take pics, tomorra.

its easy to see with the bonnet off or right back.

cheers phil

I'm still on the original clutch mc, at 135,000km. Just lucky I guess.
