View Full Version : IT Weirdness

My MY18 D5 HSE with Touch Pro and the Meridian stereo does some weird, random things.
Reverse camera does not turn on when reverse is selected.
Reverse camera does not turn off when drive is selected.
The front parking sensors do not turn on when approaching a wall when parking.
The USB cannot be accessed or selected or generates an error message (Corrupted, need formatting, etc).
The connection to my iPhone with InControl apps mostly doesn't work. In fact I've given up trying to use it.
The stereo reverts back to a radio station on start up and not to what it was doing on shutdown (USB, CD, etc).
On start up, "Media not available" appears for seconds to minutes depending on the car's mood.
The SIM card is not present or is not compatible.
Touching the icons on the screen does nothing.
There's no rhyme or reason to these things and most of the time things work as advertised. When things do go wrong the simplest solution is to exit the car, lock it and count to 60 which is reminiscent of the D3.
I know there's a update available but I'm interested if anyone else is having these issues.
Cheers,
Mark

Not here mark. I know they have phase 4 update so you may want to see if you can get that installed.

I've only had the car a couple of hours but have noticed the "reverse camera does not turn on when reverse is selected" once.
They did not install the phase 4 update.

Just got discovery back after service. Phase 4 updates seemed to have fixed mine. Never really had an issues except for phone calls sometimes would hang up, but system did not recognise it and could not use screen. Reverse camera did stay on extended previously but update seems to have fixed this. Might be worth checking it out first.

I think the parking sensor one is by design. If you are driving right into that spot after having been driving enough for the sensors to turn off then they won't turn on until a gear selector change to reverse or park has been done (think driving in traffic). You could manually switch them on using the button as you pull into the parking spot.

I think so is not turning off the rear view camera when selecting drive. There's a 5 second delay.

You could manually switch them on using the button as you pull into the parking spot.I hadn't thought to try this on my L322 where I often would like the front sensors to operate.

Phase 4 update done yesterday. The home screen is completely different and the nav now shows the speed limit. We shall see what happens with the tech glitches.

Phase 5 will be out soon if you still have issues. It is promised to fix lots of issues, but no doubt introduce others...

I had phase 4 update a couple of weeks ago. It has been faultless ever since. I used to get Bluetooth drop outs , no Spotify data (Apple music worked though), no radio information on the screen and even a full radio lock up where no buttons worked and I couldn’t turn it off.
Switching between Bluetooth devices was also slow and difficult
Everthing seems to be fixed now and it is working 100%. The new menu structures are also simpler and thing like Bluetooth have been brought to the front to make it easier.
if you haven’t got the update I suggest to get it

Still getting issues with the reverse camera not working or blacking out. Had some updates done (N347 recalls) by LR last week but it seems to have made no difference as since then the rev camera has blacked out twice and we have not been able to turn the stereo off twice. Anyone else experiencing these issues?

No mine has been good apart from 2 of the cruise control buttons stopped working, could be a hardware fault instead.

So the silly dramas continue with the reverse camera, drivers TFT and other nuisances. I've had the car to the dealer 3 times now and all they do is update it with little or no appreciable improvement.
See attached pics and video. Note the gear selected.
YouTube (https://youtu.be/uU8zk8av_hs)
I use a Lexar 32GB USB-3 stick for music that had some 2600 MP3 files on it. The issues are worst at start up and seldom (but sometimes do) occur once the car's been running for say 5 minutes. If I remove the USB and use Android Auto (the same 2600 MP3's on the phone) the issues I've been having go from frequent (daily) to very rare. I ran this way for 4 days with next to no dramas.
I have a theory (not mine but mentioned in another context on the disco5.co.uk forum) that the car is prioritising the indexing of the USB instead of its core functions of reverse camera and drivers TFT. No USB plugged in, no problems.
I've tested the Lexar USB-3 stick thinking that its read speed might be the issue but it tests as fast. See attached. I've tried a 16GB Sony USB-2 stick full of MP3s and encounter that same problems. Both sticks are FAT32 and less than the 128GB max stated in the online D5 manual.
If I put say 1GB of MP3s on the stick the car seems to behave itself although I have not done a lot of testing on this.
Thoughts anyone?

Are your 2600 MP3s in 1 directory?

No, they are in directories per artist/album.

Hi
I'd agree with it possibly overwhelming the cars "entertainment controller", whatever that may be. Try putting all those files onto a small SSD drive. Make sure it has USB 3.0 spec connector. A USB stick (even with USB 3.0 spec) is still far slower than an SSD which accesses it's memory in parallel and has a faster controller. USB sticks don't have that as they are smaller build down to a price.

My wife's Hyundai is set up so the front sensors only work when the vehicle is in reverse , they have an over ride that you have to remember to switch on when driving forward , If I had known that we would not have payed to have them fitted , I could have bought a set for a 6th of the price & fitted them my self. I asked them to wire them so they work all the time but the recon it can't be done.:angrylock:

Today I put all the MP3 files on the stick with no folders. The TFT and rev camera started playing up immediately.
I can understand (but am not happy about) the infotainment system being swamped while trying to index the files (in a car worth $139k I'd expect the sound system carputer to have more grunt but.....) but what I don't get is that this indexing (if that's what what's happening) is taking priority over what is called in my trade as life/safety, in this case the rev camera and TFT. Surely the sound system should be way down the CPU's pecking order of things to do at start-up?

My 87 yo father has a 2 year old Tucson. The front sensors were after market as Hyundai don't so them as factory and yes there's switch below the steering wheel that Dad sometimes remembers and sometimes not.

Ex SWMBO 4 YO Hyundai Veloster has factory front and rear sensors. Could have been an off the showroom car that didn’t have the option fitted so easier to install aftermarket than order one with them fitted.

Gents,
Just raising this again to see if anyone else is having this issue.
I've recently got the D5 back after 3 months in the shop for a new engine, which is a long sad story which I won't bore you with here.
But...... part of the process was getting all the updates done. Foolishly I thought (hoped) that my USB issues would then be fixed. No such luck.
This week I've tried a 32GB USB with 1000 songs on it. No folders. Used MediaMonkey to clean up the files names, locations and tags.
Plugged it in this morning and immediately lost the reverse camera. The available devices screen blinked back at me for a good 15 minutes. Infotainment system unusable. It finally got itself sorted and I could use the USB but could not re-select the radio or phone. Unplugged the USB and after another 10 minutes or so the infotainment went back to normal.
An $140k car that will go anywhere as long as you don't want to play music.

I've never tried a USB stick with songs, will dig one out then have a go tomorrow. I normally leave my phone in my pocket and connect via BlueTooth to play what's on the phone. Or using Apple CarPlay but I found that the sound after 20 minutes of playing got distorted. It wasn't the cables, I swapped those. Will let you know over the weekend how mine behaves with a similar number of songs on a FAT32 formatted USB stick, I might have a 32Gb one somewhere.

I had 2 spare memory cards to go with a USB adapter, one 16Gb and one 32Gb. I put 1695 songs in m4a format on the 16Gb not indexed. I know it's not mp3, but thought I'd give it a try just in case it is volume related. Formatted both cards as FAT32 so they were empty.
Plugging in the USB with that card, it takes about 4-5 seconds for the car ro register the memory device. At that time it becomes visible in under "Select Source" but is still greyed out. I can't switch to the memory card yet until 1 min 10 seconds when it becomes available to select. During that time, I put the car in reverse but camera remains visible. None of the symptoms you mention. In the audio options the autocorrect song titles was off first time, I did this a second time but there was no measurable difference after 4-5 seconds the device is visible but I was able to select it after 1 min 10 seconds. Rear camera worked correctly again.
I then tried the 32Gb card which had all files indexed in folders, "Media" top folder, artists level 2, album level 3 then songs. Reading the card took a little bit longer but again worked fine, camera was working correctly as well during that time. Also while the memory cards were being read, the radio was playing normal or Bluetooth from the iPhone.
It seems though from the memory cards all songs are played in title order. Maybe that can be changed but if you have multiple songs performed by different artists you'll hear one after the other. I'll stick to using CarPlay where I know I can shuffle the songs.
I'll see if I can get some mp3s on the 32Gb card and check this again. Although I have an SE, I upgraded the audio to Meridian from the HSE so should be identical to yours.
Ron
edit: I found the shuffle but when the car has gone to sleep, it starts again at the first song alphabetically. When you're just popping into a shop and back, the music will continue to play on where it left off.

Thanks Ron. Appreciate your efforts.
It must be my particular car then. This morning I've tried the same USB stick with ~1000 MP3 in SWMBO's 4yo Golf and No2 son's new Seltos. USB audio works perfectly and immediately. Using the same stick I deleted all but 100 MP3s and tried it again in the D5. Again the same issues of blinking displays, frozen controls and no sound but it came good after a minute or so, instead of the usual 15-20 minutes. I'm still convinced this is an indexing issue combined with a lack of processing power in the infotainment carputer.
I agree your stereo should be the same as mine. I think the meridian bit is just plugged into the back end of the base stereo for better sound.
Thanks again.

Having kept the USB stick in for a while now, I find that there is that one minute delay before the music starts playing from the USB stick every time the car is woken up from sleep. During that time, you cannot switch to radio or BT audio. It would seem that the system is getting an inventory of what is on the device before starting to play music from it.

Thanks again. Yesterday arvo I tried a 32GB stick with ~250 MP3 in various scenarios. Tagged, untagged, all in the root, indexed to max 3 levels and < 255 characters.
Average wait time to pay music was 20 minutes!

I would still think this is a data throughput issue, the question is where though. I would ask the dealer to install a new USB module plus wiring to the head unit. It's definitely not right. And if that doesn't resolve it, the head unit itself.

Put the USB stick in on Sunday. ~1500 MP3 files, indexed by artist to 1 level of folders, short and simple file names, tagged.
Monday morning saw two trips of 30 and 60 minutes. USB audio worked fine and was playing within a minute. So all good.
The audio quality from the USB MP3 at 320 kbps through the Meridian hifi is fantastic.
Monday arvo saw one trip of 60 minutes. USB audio started and played OK but the HMI was frozen while the drivers TFT slowly cycled through the default car symbol, map and media.
So this morning I inserted the same USB with one folder and 10 MP3. After 30 minutes its still indexing (4 coloured rectangles). TFT doing its dance again.
I give up.

I had given up on ever getting the D5 to play the game with my music collection. It might be just my car or I'm somehow special. I don't know.
But recently I updated the infotainment and being a masochist (says SWMBO) and stubborn to boot, I had a another shot. Unbelievably things seem to work!
20GB, 2700 MP3 songs on a 32GB, FAT32 stick. Folder for each artist but that's all. All songs tagged.
It works and sound is so much better (bigger?) than what I was getting via Android Auto and my phone.
There's still some hesitation when the infotainment boots up and the map in the driver display refuses to show unless I toggle between views at each start-up.
3.5 years of ownership and it finally works. I should be happy.

Good to see your IT issues are resolved!
I've fixed a few things on mine too, thin steering wheel, steering too light, removed the DPF and AdBlue, removed Stop-Start, changed the sharp corners of the tailgate and rear end design, sorted the tiny brake lights for this size of car and increased the boot space. And added a row of seats.
Loving the upgrades!
