I'm over trying to find a decent, affordable auto for my car. It occurred to me that I have a low Km Ashcroft suffix L R380 in the D1. Am I correct in thinking that the only difference between a 300Tdi box and a TD5 one is the input shaft and bellhousing?
Obviously the conversion is a much bigger task than just those things, but there is no point considering it if the actual box can't be made to fit. Clues, anyone?

Also, does the ECU need to be changed?

M8 from memory the BCU needs to have a clutch input signal for the Hill Decent Control to work. Apart from that should be OK I THINK. As you note they are both R380. Cheers

Better yes cos the auto ECU doesnt have the clutch switch input link in it and needs a remap to manual fuel map too.... a manual ECU is cheaper and works as it should ... btw the clutch switch input is not mainly for HDC it's for cruise control and gear change surge damping which is important

And the 'L' R380 is the TD5 'box (apart from the input shaft)
It's much stronger than the earlier 'J' suffix 'box.
FWIW the equivalent 'box for the Tdi siren in 1998 was a 'K' suffix. Dave Ashcroft said that they are dimensionally identical to the L and they treat them the same when rebuilding.
