View Full Version : 200tdi seized I think

I bought a 200tdi wagon a few months back with bad blow by. I thought I would have ago at trying to fix the problem with a couple of doses of oil flush. 15 min into the second flush came a quick hammering type of tone from the motor. And before I could shut the motor down it went bang. And is now seized solid.
Here’s a pic of the blow by not long before it went bang.

Any suggestions about what let go?
Thanks.

Big End bearing is my guess.

Thanks. The speedo indicates this Defender has low km for age. Why would a bearing go?

Prime suspect, maybe the oil flush thinned the oil out too much.
Blocked filter from the flush actually doing its job, combined with the filter bypass not operating, if they have a bypass.
Just guess work really.
How many low k's on it
Choices are vast now.

Thanks for suggestions.
This was 2nd flush. New Caltex oil and filter, & 1/2 dose of flush. I can’t recall km exactly but under 200k. Family is storing it for me so don’t have access right now.
Keep suggestions coming.

I have a perentie chassis/motor and new gearbox. So unless this is worth fixing the body will be going on the perentie. Will fit a turbo to the perentie while the body is off.

The blow by is a worry in itself for low k's.
With being low k but high age, maybe the timing belt has let go. Back the rockers off and see if it rotates. This would probably best case scenario.

Timing belt is a possibility. I don’t know if it’s ever been done. The PO didn’t know.

A timing belt break won’t seize the engine. The push rods bend instantly.
Time for a rebuild.

How hard is a rebuild at Hm for someone whose never done an engine rebuild?

About the same as any other engine.

The thing is that an engine with that much blowby would almost certainly had a damaged bore or piston. Wasting time and money on oil flushing is unfortunate. The first job should have been pull off the head and inspect the insides for damage. Now you've probably got a lump of scrap metal that might or might not have salvageable parts in it.

True in hindsight. It’s all a learning experience.
It was bought with two options in mind, fix economically or as a donor body for the next perentie project. The body’s in pretty good condition. So will salvage that.

They are a very simple engine and easy to rebuild but cost inhibitive really [bighmmm]
Chances are it could need a crank regrind = oversized bearings and a rebore with new pistons and rings [bigwhistle]
Sell the head as 200 Tdi heads are like rocking horse poo [wink11]

I was thinking that I would buy the head for a spare if it comes up.. [emoji3]

If it was a 300tdi with an R380 I might be tempted to have a go. But not that keen with an LT77 of unknown quality, and parts being hard to source. I even had trouble on the weekend finding an oil filter.

its a tdi, easy. to nearly impossible depending on how much work you want to put into it.
Tooling will be the issue for measuring up.

Ta Dave. I think I’ve pretty much decided to lift the body off the 1992 Defender and to replace the white 1983 county body on the perentie (remember we swapped the LT95 btw the silver and white perentie ages ago?).
It would be handy if you could come back to Brissy in the next week or so. The rebuilt gearbox is still in the back of the white wagon. Thanks Bearman.

Huh? They use the most common filter in the world? Use the Ryco Z9. The 200 and 300 used the same shorter filter, but the longer one works on a 200.
There are very few things you could need in a rebuild that are hard to find. The head is really the only possible item, but you can buy them or switch to a 300TDI head. It is a very simple engine and very simple to rebuild. Fix it up and enjoy for another 30 years. It will last forever if maintained properly.

Ryco indicated a Z731. I was wondering if a different filter would work.
