View Full Version : Opinion and expertise required D90 v. D110

OK,
So my P38a has been fun - but is DEFINITELY going now (for those that remember, I was trying to sell it, then my entire family arrived from the UK and I needed something to shepherd them around this stunning land in, now they are gone and I am FREEEEE!!!!!!)
I have my own views on the matter, but I would like to know people's opinions on the whole "purchase a used D90 v D110" debate.
Before you launch in, if you could consider my situation and help stear a decision, I would be eternally grateful.
I am not married or close to it;
I surf longboards regularly;
I go soft roading / camping most weekends, nothing serious though;
I drive to work in the City;
I would opt for the bench seats in the D90
I will finance some of it with a ballon payment, so depreciation is an issue
Not sure if any of these has a bearing on thoughts?
(having written this, I am sure there must be a similar thread somewhere on here, but I could not find it.....feel free to correct and point me in the right direction!)

ide go the 90, but im biased!!!!
only prob i can see is you long board wont fit in it 8O
but it will fit on it! the 90 it great around town, keeps up with traffic
easy, very zipy. excelant vision also.
you can fit plenty of gear in the back of one, there are two us and
we can stuff as much into the 90 as we could into the old D1.
its just easyer in the 90 cos its square.
as for depreciation, i paid $30 000 for mine with 1yrs rego 26 000k's
on the clock, was built in 2004. if you can find one you will pay 27k
to 32k for it. market value on mine is 32k.
the other prob is if you can find one they sell really quick! the 6 i found
went with in 2-4days of being advertised.
and if you ever wanted to sell it you could easily.

Do you want to put the board inside or out?
Should make the choice very easy. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Struggling to get it inside a D110 at best, so rroof is fine - Boards range from 9'1" 10'4"

Bench seats in the back are removed for the australian market, you can get them put in, but it will probably cost big $$$.
More space, in a 110 for gear and mates.
Head says 110, heart says 90 8)

I agree with Phoenix about the head/heart.
I would love both https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
THe SWB's are definately more fun..

I know the 110 holds its value well, the wagon would be a better resale choice but the 90 would be more fun

I love the 90.
Good looks, zippy, highly manouvreable, and goes very well due to its very light weight. Even better chipped.
But then, there's only two of us and we tow a caravan.
I did look at a 110, but bought with the heart.

The other advantage of the 110 is that you can sleep in it when the weather gets sh1te!!!! https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Depreciation.... Don't worry about that, Defenders hold their value BIG time.
As for bench seats, they have to be the most uncomfortable things known to man.

I would go the 90. Not a second thought.
You don't need the extra room of the 110.
Your boards will fit on the roof.
Better offroad.
Better in the city.
Better resale (few around compared with the 110).
90s look great in yella, 110s look like 'Big Bird'
Now lets start trying to find you one https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I reckon the D90 is the go,
As many have already said... they are great fun off road - in the tight stuff they are significantly more capable too.
I think if I was in your situation - the only reason I'd go with a 110 is if I felt I needed the extra internal space...

Go the 90 Brother,
I have a 7 seater disco, if i could get a decent 7 seater 90 (like in pommyland) I would. Of course I'd then need a trailer and full on rack for the children!!!!
90's will hold their value, cause there are SFA of them about.

I would go the 110 for versatility. Situations change and the 110 is more suitable for any situation. The 90's as nice as they look are limited should your gear options or family expand. The 110 can be set up as a nice camper for yourself and maybe a friend. Personally if I had it over again I would go a Disco auto TD5. A much more comfortable car and every bit as capable as the Fenders apart from easily damaged plastics.

Seems a very strong concensus towards the 90. so I had better start looking around for a nice one.
I am 6'5", so spend most of the time sleeping in a tent when out and about, and was considering a roof tent if I can find a second hand one..
Speaking to Anthony at Graeme Cooper last night, he indicated that it was hard to find 90's with bench seats as they were not Aussie spec. Does anyone have any thoughts or experiance on fitting more than 2 road legal seats in it? I assume you would need bench seats and some sort of engineering certificate approved seat belt combination.
Great to get some feedback from other owners on this SWB v LWB. Saves me learning in my usual way - the hard way!

Do your homework before opting for the bench seats route.
a: you'll have to import them - calc the duty & gst on arrival
b: you'll need an engineering certificate - there goes $400 or so
c: It might change your registration status. Someone in LROC got caught out, & pays the rego for a bus. Plus more frequent inspections. (This might only apply to a 110 with bench seats - 9 seats & over? I'm not sure)
If you're 6'5" you'll be happier with a smaller steering wheel so you can get in & out. So you're up for an engineering cert anyway.
Do you intend to do any touring? The 110 will be more comfortable viz the pitching & ride.
Lastly I suspect the 90 might be more of a gamble with depreciation. The 110 is a known quantity, there's plenty out there. The 90 will appeal more to LR enthusiasts only as time goes on. Will the 90 become a collectors item or an orphan? Who knows.

Hmmm, couple of issues here.
At 6'5" you will need to raise the seat slightly to give you the ability to slide it back over the bulkhead joint for more legroom.
A bench seat is absolutely hopless unless the person in the middle is 3 feet tall, (or 6 years old). No leg room available due to the width of the transmission tunnel, gear shifts and handbrake. Dont forget the seat belt requirements. I,m guessing lap and sash is required. No cubby box = no storage up front.
If a bench seat is an absolute requirement, buy an F250 truck.

I'd go 110 as your better having too much room then not enough, but having said that does the 90 have a better turning circle???

Think I might have made a description error.
I was meaning to have bench seats running front to back in the back of the D90 - rather than across the front row. Kinda like the old S3 GS models.
I notice one in WA on cars.com or something that has flip down seats, but could not see a picture of the inside.
Good point about the moving of the front seat / smaller stearing wheel...
Could all be pointing to the To Hard / Expensive Basket......110 currently in front.....

Have you driven a 90 or 110? Stick with the Range Rover. I am 6 feet 4 inches and I can barely drive a Defender.
I think they are great, but the seats are too far forward and rammed up against the door pillar. I also find that it is almost impossible to get my foot on the brakes, as my leg gets wedged between the steering wheel and door.
At least with a Range Rover a normal sized person can get in and drive, not like with Defenders, where you just about have to assume midget status to get comfortable (no offence intended to Defender drivers).

I said 110, but as phoenix said my heart said 90.
I reckon the 110 simply for the extra room for gear, and as mentioned you can whip the seats out and make the back a bed aswell if needed. Both have the same engine and both can be chipped, the 90 is better off road but the 110 aint far behind. Matt

I've got a 110 and it rides much better on rough roads with less pitching than my Discovery used to. The Discos seats may have looked better but are no more comfortable I find.
I'm 6' 1' (and shrinking!) and don't find it a prob. at all with leg or arm room and feel that most who have these troubles probably sit too near the steering wheel.
Anyway you can get more cartons of beer and other stuff in a 110 for long trips and the cook can get some of her rubbish in as well.
Besides 90s look funny and too short, more like a Dinky toy.
Buy what you feel most comfortable with.
Cheers.

I'd go for the 110.
The differences in off-road ability between similarly set-up 90s and 110s will probably come down to driver ability.
You can fit more/bigger fish in a 110.

If you haven't already and you are tall and long in the legs I would suggest that you sit in one first. The 110 has more leg room due to the bar behind the driver's seat in the 90 restricting the rear adjustment.
I flirted with the idea once and was anthropomorphically embarrassed.  https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

In a 110, getting the extra leg room is a piece of p1ss... All you do is use a couple of lengths of 20mm box section as spacers under each rail & that should give you enough clearance over the lip on the seat box to let it go back further. On the 90 you're bu@@ered as there's a bulkhead in the way.... :?

Tempted, have thought along those lines. The Fender is an ideal second vehicle, but as primary transport is not ideal. Shame you are so far away or I may have seriously considered it. The fender compared to my series 1 Disco is way uncomfortable, more so for the passenger.
May look at a second car soon, thinking about selling the Duc and buying the wife a Trans Am. Maybe.
