View Full Version : Oil Dilution problem

Posting this out of interest for others
Took delivery of the D5 in september 2018, Having spent 6 weeks of my ownership of the car in the UK (not being driven at all in that time). I was very surprised on the weekend after christmas to be told by the car that it needed an oil service having covered only 3000 or so kilometers.
Being mindful of the oil dilution problem I booked it in a few days after New Years day for a check and possible oil change, but before it went in I went and got an oil sampling kit from ALS who are apparently specialists in the field.
When the car went in and was hooked up to the computer (I presume) the result was 7.3% fuel dilution. This apparently requires oil change and new oil filter. The technicians took a sample of the oil as it came out and I took it straight up to ALS.
I was very surprised to find the resultant information which showed only 1% fuel dilution.
This begs the question as to how the oil dilution sensor came to its result and if so are the dilution sensors faulty?
ALS is an international company dealing with the mining industry and other large users of vehicles and as such are unlikely to be wrong.
Any thoughts anyone?

LR refer to this issue as an "early service warning" issue, brought on by the car estimating oil dilution. There is no equipment in the car to measure actual oil dilution. You're not the first person to have their oil tested and so far I haven't heard of a single test coming back with actual oil dilution anywhere near the percentage that the car estimates.
LR have campaign N222v3 which is a software update, this should have been applied when you took it in for a service. Following this software update from my own experience (but I'd only done 200km since the update) that the "km to service" are more in line with kilometres driven.
Not sure if your test gave you the wear metals in the oil, which would be very high. So it is probably good to get the oil changed and LR should do this under warranty. Mine has had 2 oil changes, the first one was days before the N222 software fix came out, earlier this month it was applied and another oil change done.

Yes my service required warning came on at 5000km even before I started towing. electronic oil level at 7000km was 98%.
Car is now back at LR service for past 3 days for software update . 1st 3 attempts have failed at module 14. and required head office/UK's T.A ? fix today and now LR is changing oil and filter as part of this early service warning. Statement about diesel getting past the rings and diluting the oil. I cant accept this as gospel ---If this is truly happening at 5000km then there is a SERIOUS issue with the motor. I'm told many TD6 are having the same issue. Is it real? or just a sensor issue? I never had an issue with my D4 3l V6 diesel

GM doesn't have this problem with it's diesels as it regenerates the DPF by activating an injector on the DPF.
Land Rover elected to richen the mixture in the engine.
I bet that it was cheaper than the cost of another injector.
You reap what you sow.

FIO - fuel in oil issue ----It is not a faulty sensor issue!!! .. The problem is VERY REAL and a major hippcup. LR know a lot about it and it is NOT a rare issue - IT IS COMMON!. Reason is blamed on Driver's driving behaviour (= BS in my opinion) See attach Bulletin

See Clause 2 why this occurs - due to higher number of only partial DPF regeneration cycles occurring - greater chance with TD6 rather than the 4 cylinder engines. Higher amount of diesel post injection. STILL NO explanation in why/ how the fuel is getting into the oil!!! dilution > 6% will result in early engine failure if the warning is not heeded.
I doubt any one driving a New Disco can manage the time duration and distance between advertised service intervals. I took possession of my New Disco in Sept 2018 - warning light "Service Required" by about 4000kM in mid Dec 18 and Serviced Jan 18 after I was advised it was not urgent by Doncaster LR.

I agree fuel in oil will happen, it is unburnt fuel from the DPF regen cycle being scraped off the cylinder walls and ending up in the sump, Just not to the degree the car's computers work it out to be, there's enough people that have tested their oil for this - these tests have shown oil dilution nowhere near the 6% that the car estimates it to be and throws the "Service Required".
If you took delivery of your car in September 2018 I would think it is a MY18 - make sure the dealer applies the software fix referred to as N222v3.
