Have a new camper on order. Given that I probably can't match my D4 rim hub & stud pattern what is the next best option in terms of rim versatility. For instance what 6 stud rims out there are interchangeable with each other. Does toyota fit nissan fit mitsubishi etc. in case I might need to borrow one sometime in the future?

I am not sure about the D4 pattern, but you can get Land rover earlier stud pattern bits for axles. Unfortunately they usually cost a bit extra.

I thought P38A, D2, L322, L405, D3/4, D5 all use the same stud pattern - the same as Commodore 5-stud.

There is bound to be an exception but most of the common 6 stud rims are the same PCD.

Commodore has the same pitch circle diameter as D2.
D2, P38A, RRS, D3/4, and L322 are the same. I have a set of RRS wheels that I used on my P38A and they fit my L322. D2 and P38A are the same.
So I reckon it's worth checking Commodore wheels/hubs.

The centre spigot size is different on a D2/38A from the D3 ( and D4?.)
The D2 is smaller however this should not be a real worry on a trailer, except if you get wheels with a smaller spigot than the hub.
I bought D3 adaptors for my trailer as the vendor didn't at that point have any D2 in stock and I had to grind down the adaptor as the D2 hole was smaller than the D3 spigot.
You can get sleeves if the hub is smaller than the wheel, but IMHO for a trailer unnecessary.

Yes, I used hubcentric rings with the RRS rims on my P38A
