For the post-2007 D3's and pre-2013 D4's fitted with the 2.7L TDV6 motor I've read that blanking the EGR is not as simple as purchasing and fitting the blanking plate kit but rather requires additional ECU programming (e.g. this EGR deactivation patch file offered by BAS < Discovery(R) 3 2.7L EGR Deactivation Patch File (NOT ADVISED FOR ROAD USE) – BAS Remaps, Powering the Landrover tuning world! (https://bellautoservices.co.uk/store/discovery-3-2-7l-egr-deactivation-patch-file-not-advised-for-road-use/) >). Once deactivated at the ECU are the same blanking plates as used on the earlier - pre-2007 D3 2.7L TDV6 then fitted - most of the for sale ads state it's only for pre-2007 models only but I cannot find any listing for later models so perhaps that's only due to the software patching required?

What is the EGR system like on these vehicles? Reliable?

Cant answer the above, but your last question, you are much better off without them. They wear out and play up like everything. They also cause the inlet manifold to get full of gunk. And no,fitting only blanking plates will cause issues, you need the vehicle software changed as well. Many tunes include the software to delete the EGR's.

And doing this and blanking them as well makes sure they are 100% closed.

I got mine done after a failed EGR. It was going to cost a lot to get a new one so I took the plunge. Make sure you get a nice remap while your in there. MUCH nicer car to drive & good to know less crap is entering.

And ideally delete the EGR coolers as well.

Another source of trouble down the track.

I was wondering about the coolers, they don't seem to get a mention when the topic of blanking comes up.

I had mine remapped and removed the EGR's and blanked 'em off... much, much nicer to drive, feels like a different vehicle.

cheers

P.S. hadn't even thought about the EGR coolers.... may have to do a bit of research on that topic.

Who have you guys gone to to get the blank and remap? Would an MR auto be the goods?

I will be blanking my EGRs as I'm getting low level faults. I have the IID tool, so now who sells the best remap ie EGR/tune ??

2010 D4 2.7

And for those interested, also the time to set up a sensor for EGT.

Bell Auto Services (BAS) in the UK. Use your GAP Diagnostics IID Tool (if you don't have one yet then sort that out first).

Remap - IIDTool Discovery(R) 2.7L TDV6 Remap – BAS Remaps, Powering the Landrover tuning world! (https://bellautoservices.co.uk/store/iidtool-discovery-2-7l-tdv6-remap/)

EGR delete - Discovery(R) 3 2.7L EGR Deactivation Patch File (NOT ADVISED FOR ROAD USE) – BAS Remaps, Powering the Landrover tuning world! (https://bellautoservices.co.uk/store/discovery-3-2-7l-egr-deactivation-patch-file-not-advised-for-road-use/)

Blanking kit - TDV6 EGR Blanking Kit Pre 07 ONLY (NOT FOR ROAD USE) – BAS Remaps, Powering the Landrover tuning world! (https://bellautoservices.co.uk/store/tdv6-egr-blanking-kit-pre-07-only-not-for-road-use/)

The exhaust gas travels through the coolers before getting to the EGR. They are bolted together.

The other end of the cooler is bolted to the exhaust manifold.

Removing then also deletes coolant pipelines associated with the cooler which is a shell and tube style cooler.

So are the coolant fittings that go to the EGR coolers just blanked off or do you connect the in and out with a hose so it can still flow through?

In another post it was discussed further with schematics. I’ve not done it. Others have.

The pipe work can be deleted completely removing a lot of spaghetti.

Brilliant, thanks. I’ll do some digging and try to find the other post with the details.

EDIT: found a good guide on fitting the blanking kit at https://secure.bellautoservices.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Fitting-the-Bell-Auto-Services-TDV6-EGR-Blanking-Kit-to-a-MY06-TDV6.pdf

Found this thread which has some discussion on removing the EGR coolers.

The EGRs were blanked when I bought mine. Later I was told the coolers were corroded/ing so they were removed.

thanks for the info,

can you confirm the blanking plates for a D3 is the same as the D4. ??
BAS only sell plates for the D3... assuming the same ?

Probably a question best asked to BAS. Let us know the answer though.

Absolutely the same...

So this is for pre 2013 D4 with the 2.7 tdv6. Does anyone know if the 3.0SDV6 can have the same EGR blanking plates done? I realise it also needs an ECU mod or emulators.

Thinking about taking all the EGR hardware off...

I have blanked off the egrs with a D3/D4 blank kit.
And re flashed the ECU to remove the EGR using the BAS egr patch.
Patch worked as expected, and was easy using the IID BT

results. more power, and better initial acceleration from a start. just seems more urgent in acceleration.

Same as mine, also less turbo lag,and pulls up hills a lot better.

My fuel economy is about the same, but the only down side is SWMBO seems to be wearing out the brakes quicker[bighmmm]

I've done a lot of tune / egr delete and apart from the power increase customers say fuel economy around town is way better, round 9.7L/100KM.
The blanking kits work on D3 / D4, just not needed on a D4 once its been tuned.
And as I always say to anyone getting a tune done, ask for the dyno results, just saying "oh you get xx power kw and xx NM" when you fork out the big bucks to me is not good enough. Show me factual dyno info before and after tune.

I always get dyno results before the tune and after and if I am doing something else that I have decided to try then its often 3 dyno runs so I'm sure the mod I'm doing is going to be a good thing.

Is it worth removing the EGR system though so less dead weight and by passing the cooling so less chance of future corrosion and leaking issues?

Less dead weight? [bigrolf][bigrolf][bigrolf]

Want less corrosion issues, change coolant out more often.
