hi all, just signed up so this is all new to me, trying to work out How To navigate around this sight anyway I think I'm in th right place now. I have a 2008 2.7 turbo diesel discovery auto and I've noticed that when I take my foot of th accelerator it seems as though I am slightly applying th brakes and is worse as it gets into 1st gear like th transmission is tight or something, has this occurred for anyone else?

Sounds like engine braking to me, did you have it in sports mode?

Nope, I tried pressing it while I was slowing down cause I thought th same thing but a msg flashed up on dash saying something like speed to high so it won't engage if your going to fast.

How long have you had the D3 and what vehicle did you have before it?

It's not a racecar is about all I can say. What your experiencing could be just how it is. Try jumping in a mates disco if available.
Then you can compare. But tbh unless youve got noise then I wouldn't worry.

Had a td5 and have owned the 3 since th start of this year but only just noticed this issue in th last week. Drove it today in sports mode and it's really noticeable in first, really resists when backing off.

Are you sure that the vehicle is not in low range or a low range mode? A message like what you said above usually only appears if the cars in low range and you exceed the safe speed limit for the Transfer case. The air suspension also limits vehicle speed if in access or off-road height.

when was the last time the transfer case, front and rear differential oils were changed?

also, if driven normally the transmission rarely uses first gear. Normal start stop driving will use 2nd to move off,(saves fuel) Only in manual mode or in low range will it use 1st to get the most benefit of the torque converter lock-in up nice and early.

What does the tacho look like when this is happening? IE do the revs stay up and consistently lower in line with car speed? Or does the needle drop when you take your foot off, then the car slows while the needle remains low?

Im wondering if it’s really transmission related or maybe handbrake dragging or something brakes related?

To rephrase, is the transmission in lockup when this is happening?

Oh, I wasn't aware that 1st is only used in low or manual mode, mine uses 1st every time I take off. It's booked in on Thursday for a service which will include replacing all oils, hoping a change in transmission fluid makes a difference.

Not sure what u mean "transmission in lockup" but I did jack it up th other day and spun th wheels and seemed all OK as I was also thinking it may be th handbrake sticking

Mine does this - adaptive transmission is my bet. When I drive like an old man with my foot on the brake on a long downhill grade (any speed), I can eventually take my foot off the brake and the car seems to know i want to maintain that speed and will retard any up change in the gears. Wife's VW polo DSG does it even more at my favourite long downhill 80km/h country road i travel every day. Drive like a maniac for a few hours and you will find the car will mimic this for a while too. I say "normal".
