View Full Version : Fault Code Reader in Tamworth, NSW? - Suspension Fault

Hi guys,
Let me know if this is inappropriate but I just got back from a camping on the weekend where, when driving on dirt for an extended period of time, I got a lovely amber yellow 'Suspension Fault: Normal Height Only' error.
The fault isn't there at the start and comes on after about 2-3 minutes or so of driving.
Reading the forums I'm thinking it is the air compressor - it has never been replaced to my knowledge on a 2005 LR3.
Before I commit to trying a repair kit or replacing the compressor I was wondering if anyone had a fault code reader I could make use of in Tamworth, NSW?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated in troubleshooting or finding the best fix.
Cheers,
Matt.

The local Ford dealer used to be a Land Rover dealer also, not sure if the Land Rover guy is still there though, I don't of any Indy Landy places in Tamworth unless there an AULRO Member nearby that has a code reader, next would Port Macquarie for a LR Dealer.

I gave the local LR dealer a call. They quoted $99 just to read the codes.

You can pretty much bet that the fault is indicating that the reservoir pressure isn't increasing at an acceptable rate. The dryer's felt pad may be blocked with pulverised desiccant or the compressor may be weak due to a worn-out valve or piston.
The next stage of failure will be that the compressor will be unable to get the vehicle up to normal height, at which time the vehicle will be dropped to the bump-stops. If this occurs then restart the engine and as soon as the vehicle is high enough to drive, remove the 20A engine bay suspension fuse before the fault re-occurs so that the vehicle can't lower. The 5A passenger compartment suspension fuse which supplies an ignition sense to the suspension module can then be removed so as to prevent the repeated 50kph messages which can be annoying.

Thanks Graeme! Would you recommend a rebuild or replacement?

I've not rebuilt either brand although I had replaced desiccant in an Hitachi attempting to avoid it being replaced under warranty. Some people have had success with rebuilding the Hitachi but many others haven't had much success.

Thanks guys for all the input. It hasn't dropped at all having been left at full height so I think I'm safe to go a new compressor.
Could someone please confirm for me that this is the Hitachi I have already? I couldn't find a serial number anywhere I could get access to.
I'm fairly sure but don't want to order the wrong one.

I'm sure that's not the Hitachi but its been a while since I dealt with the compressors.

Sorry it posted upside down. I checked from all angles before ordering - looks the same as the Hitachi but I'll post an update hopefully at the weekend when it arrives!

Hitachi compressors have a red and blue outlet on the air side, the AMK doesn’t. OEM fitment is Hitachi in most cases. Here’s a couple of photos of mine.

Cars done 187,000km on the original compressor without fault. I will be putting a full seal and filter kit through it soon, I expect it to last another 180,000km. Don’t see the need to spend $600-700 on a new compressor when a $120 service kit does the same.

Ended up replacing the compressor with a Chinese Hitachi type. It came with a three year warranty and was about a third of the cost of elsewhere. I figure it should get me through the next two years until I'm working.
No issues so far!
