Has anyone done an Auto conversion using Ashcroft's 4 speed ZF auto for the Defender.
I think it's the same auto used in the Range Rover and Discovery.
Thanks.

I would be more inclined to use the Ford 6r80 box, you should be able to bolt it straight up to the puma engine, if parts are needed just get them from a ranger.
I know Sheldon from Cor Conversions did an adapter for the 6r80 to the lt230, but as of last week he has shut up shop. He still may have parts to do it though.

Ok that's interesting Vern. I would think that apart from the mechanical items there would also be some ECU remapping required.

For 6r80 Quick 6 Stand-Alone Transmission Control (https://www.usshift.com/usq6.shtml)

my local auto specialist said ford removed bearings from the 6r80 box that are in the ZF. He said its a **** box. That said he worships the 6L90

valve body clearance for the front prop shaft is a challenge. Forbyn make a wide body lt230 that would work

Yeah that's the ECU he said.
The 6r80 is supposed good for 1000hp just with an ECU tune, and lots of Nm too.
I was trying to find pics Sheldon sent me of the 6r80 mated to the lt230, he had the adapter housing and shafts made ready to go. (Can only find the pic of the shafts)

It's a Ford engine, so wouldn't the Ford gearbox just mount up? Would a Ranger ECU work?

6R80 also used in the diesel Territory (ZF in the petrol).

Yes the 6R80 will most likely bolt up to the 2.2 as is. Ford have a long standing modular system for engines and boxes. The back of the 6R80 doesn't bolt up to the LT230. The rear case of the MT82 is different to the rear case of a Ford derived MT82.

the Ranger ECU will take feeds from the body control unit (BCU) and transmission control module (TCM). Likewise the TCM will take feed from the ECU. Unless you can code out the inter-reliance on each of the 3 computers you will find the ECU and TCM will have conniptions especially if the BCU is not in the equation. A stand alone takes an RPM feed and a few other feeds but can operate on its own shift table algorithm. One way to get around the Ranger BCU is to use the Ranger keys and ignition ring and use other essential bits in the Defender. Starting to get complicated. FYI - the OEM TCM for the 6R80 is in the valve body as a mechatronic unit. The US shift unit is just an intercept box that talks to the OEM TCM.
