Ok had to get -rather quickly to the hospital today to visit my grandmother , cut a long story short .....
My 1992 Range Rover 300TDI , was losing power ... the more foot to the floor ....the less and less go and the motor had a shudder to it .
I pulled to the side of the road and notied that she just wanted to die , checked the air filter ...clean and dry [raining non stop] plenty of air getting thru ......check the fuel .....next to nothing 8O
Before you ask .....she had a full tank  mind you she has sat idle for near a week and a half due to PAS leaking ....
So i check the ACDELCO glass bowl filter .....bubbles lotsa bubbles blowing around in there 8O so i grabbed a 10mm spanner and bled the filter next to the fire wall .....but still more and more air bubbles 8O 8O
I checked every hose that i could see and reach , all clamps tight , no apparant leaks :x So knowing that the pumpm is at the motor and it would be using vaccum i thought i would just open the fuel cap to see how that affected it  The cap let go with a thump as the tank also sounded like it popped back into shape from vaccum 8O 8O 8O
But leaving the cap off the bubbles stopped 8O and the motor returned to full function and power 8O put the cap back on and bubbles start back up and the tank starts to groan motor wants to stall 8O 8O take the cap off and what do you know the motor goes back to normal ........
So with this going on .....what tha hell would it be 8O 8O I can't drive around with no fuel cap on ...and it isn't solving the problem its just band aiding it
Can someone PLEASE PLEASE shed some light on this for me

I think you've answered your own question Sith. I'm no expert here but it seems as tho' you've created some sort of vacuum, the pump by your description seems to be cavitating which will kill power...get out the air hose and blow the cap breather, and/or do the same to the inline fuel filters. Only going by experience, clogged fuel filters will kill your motor, as it starves for fuel, good luck and reply, interested to know what the prob is.....

Ok i will try the old process of elimination tomorrow .........
start with removing all lines and blowing them out
then try one of the old orange emergancy fuel caps ...as was suggested it may be that as they are designed to breath not lock as a vaccum
and change the filter element in the AC DELCO filter ....
will see how i go .....
once again thanx for the advise and relies

Just a quick one....
It's probably not the filter by virtue of the fact that when you take the cap off everything is OK.
My money is on the cap as IIRC they are supposed to breath.

Hi Sith,
I am with Simon on this - sounds to me like your fuel filler breather pipe is either kinked or blocked. I have heard elswhere of this happening with these exact same symptoms.
Should not be too hard to fix once you start fiddling with it.
Good luck.

Cameron

Ahem... [cough] How do you explain it all working when you take the filler cap off then? If the problem was that far down the fuel system, it would still be there with or without the filler cap in place.
...but I am prepared to be proven wrong.

Entirely fair comment there, Mark. Change the cap, Sith.
Mark, where are you these days, after your world adventure?

Ok ...started on her at 730am today 8O
Blew out ever fuel line front to back , breather hose , removed the AC DELCO glass bowl filter totally cleaned and brand new filter , dropped all the fuel from the tank and ran it thru a paper gauze filter ..amazed at the gunk in there 8O 8O
Bled the canister in the engine bay again .
Went to Britt Parts brought new fuel cap
it is 1236pm WA time ..........just sat down
verdict .......stopped doing it 8) 8) 8) 8)
but now noticed all the small fuel hoses between the injectors and split or leaking
so i dont know which one of the above seems to have fixed it .....
Dave at Britt Parts seems to think it wouldn't be the fuel cap as they are ment to be a sealed unit ..but believes it may be the fuel lines ....he has it next week anyway to fix the ignition so will go all over it then
I would like to thank everyone for their input and advise
Many thanks !

The fuel caps have a check valve in them, they can breath inwards not outwards.....

Hi Guys had the same thing happen to my TDi , landrover service guy replaced fuel pump and filter ,reason was tank had slam **** in it , which blocked up pump and filter up, after that motor was back to normal and told me to put some fuel additive in the tank to stop growth of slam stuff and drain the back tank filter for water & slam every month into it clears up, that was last november and motor still running fine. cheers4now alex

Back in the UK now... https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Living with the in-laws... :?
Looking on the bright side, the in-laws live in London, are charging us almost nothing in rent and we now have live in baby sitters. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
So yes, we're trying to get back to some normality, looking for work and somewhere to live. Oh... and the truck is supposed to be back in the UK on May 16th. 8)

Going to pen a book about your recent life, Mark? It's not everyone who decides to go for a drive around the world, in the same car. Especially that one!
