View Full Version : Oil level vs iidtool oil volume discrepancy

I’ve just done my first engine oil and filter change on my MY14 TDV6, following the LR workshop manual.

Sucked out the old oil using the vacuum tube, and removed just under 6.0ltrs so all OK (Car oil level was indicating full).

Fitted new oil filter and refilled with 5.0ltrs of new oil, ran the engine for 10 minutes, left the engine off for 10 minutes then checked the oil level using the vehicle level display and my iidtool.

This is where things went a bit strange. Vehicle display showed just above minimum and said add 1.0ltr, iidtool indicated 5.8ltrs. Left it another minutes no change on either display. Added 0.5ltr, ran engine for 10 minutes, off for 10 minutes and rechecked. Vehicle display now showing halfway, iidtool 6.3ltrs. Added another 0.4ltrs (5.9ltrs total), ran engine for 10 minutes, off for 10 minutes and rechecked. Vehicle display now showing full, iidtool 6.7ltrs.

I know the iidtool shows a calculated volume, but it seems to be quite a bit different to the actual volume.

Has anyone else had this, or can explain why it’s happened?

Rechecked levels again this morning on a cold engine (Oil temp 24*C) using the vehicle display and iidtool.

Vehicle display still showing maximum, iidtool measured has dropped by 1.0 m (Whatever that unit is?) and calculated volume now 6.6ltrs.

I guess it doesn’t calculate (estimate) all that well. Use the gauge as you have and replace the 6L you removed and you’ll be fine

Thanks for that, I’ll consider putting a 2.7l in when my crank snaps [bighmmm] [bawl]

I've never bothered checking the oil level with the GAP tool before or after a change. To tell the truth, I didn't know you could.....
Sucking the stuff out gives just under 6ltrs firstly, then let it settle and a bit more comes up the pipe.
I then just use a graduated jug (not from the kitchen 'cos cook would beat me) to refill with 6 ltrs or a tad under. Level on the dash says maximum after running for a short while and allowing it to drain down so all good.
Easily the quickest and cleanest change I've ever done. Unless I knock over the jug. :)

Last oil change I used the vacuum pump and got over 6l out, then drained the last 0.5l or so via the sump as I wanted to be sure I got it all out. Simply refilled with 6l of new oil, ran the engine and topped off as required using the in car gauge....don't have a GAP tool (yet) and would not have thought to use it to check level anyway.

The "e-dipstick" hasn't let me down yet
