The coupling around the prop shaft is starting to crack. At 110,000 klm's. Has any one else had this? I would have thought that even Land Rover would have made this component to last a little longer.

If we are talking about the rubber donut - seems about rite. Mine went at 100,000 km with road use - they are cheap to buy and easy to replace.

Some people replace with a unversal joint (different shaft required) but others stick by the donut as it does help a little to cushion drive line shocks - I do think they should be been listed as a service item for the 100,000k service though.

Reckon you were lucky to get to 110,000. Mine went at 50 something thousand. Mostly farm work though - quite a lot of low range stuff.

I did 3 in 30,000kms...

Changed to UniJoint and never looked back for the next 80,000kms.

You can get unijoints anywhere, donuts arent as easy to find!

They're about $120ea to replace. Just change them. IF you go to a uni type shafts its then about $70-100 for the 4 bolt pinion flange and about $300 for the tailshaft. Unless you get gnarly with it in the bush, the donuts will last though.

This one was about 6 month old before I landed it wit a bit too much noise pedal.

Harmonic Damper, standard on the rear diffs of Series 2 Discovery.

Series 1 doesnt have one at the rear but does have one on the front diff.

Slunnie,

The dead coupling in the pic was it a GKN brand, there are some cheap and nasty ones on the market which do not last. I could not see any markings on the one in the pic.

Thanks all for the replies. Sounds like at 110,000 klm's out of mine I should not be whinging.

Yep it happens to all of us. Noticed a new vibration the other day and sure enough on having a look on the weekend the coupling is shot. Ordered one from Graeme Cooper this morning, $140.00.
The car's only done 140 000km however it was sitting in storage for 3 & 1/2 years which probably didn't help. I do also recall that the LR dealer had replaced one under its initial warranty fairly early on, around 30-40 000km saying that they did have a bad batch........

Our rubber coupling ( original 170k ) was looking tired. I replaced it with a cheap non gen one. Broke it on the first track it did, had to fit original one back on. Finally it died last weekend

Have been quoted about $250 for a genuine one 8O

might be worth trying a wrecker for a good used genuine one, there must be plenty out there that have not had a hard life.

our Disco is a V8 auto with 50mm lift & gets used reasonably hard off road so pretty happy about the lifespan of the original part. I wont go for a non genuine donut again.

I have been suffering a total vehicle vibration at 100 km/h and by a process of elimination it must be the donut...Hi Ho Hi Ho it's off to genuine spare parts I go https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Not as bad as the Alfa though....the donut was located just next door to the exhaust and used to go every 30,000 km and as the gearbox was in the rear diff the vibration in the drive shaft was horrendous at 5000 rpm 8O

$250 8O

I bought a genuine one from a landrover specialist (Morwood Motors in Canberra) for $99 in January.
