2.7L TDV6 Aftermarket Instruments

For their 2.7L TDV6 specifically, or for other applicable generic D3/4 stuff, has anyone fitted aftermarket EMS gauges?

I'm particularly interested in a D4 EGT gauge for towing my heavy brick through the centre and for hilly stuff (we don't have much of that in our WA sandplain country).

The Madman gear has always impressed me, and they have a new easy read digital EGT gauge almost ready for sale in July - which may be too late for me - see Products | South Africa | Madman (https://www.madmandevelopments.com/products) at EMS3. My 2.7 does NOT have an EGT sensor fitted, so will need a probe fitted.

Q1 - currently agonising where to fit the probe and how much work is involved. It has just been suggested use the driver's/RHS exhaust manifold (more meat than the other side?) via a blanking kit to the EGR as per D2 TD5 etc.

That in turn leads me to Q2 - With the D2, everyone recommended a coolant level warning gauge (which I had). I don't ever recall any such suggestion for the D3/4, which leads me to ask the obvious question - is there a factory version already fitted, and/or if not, is one warranted?

Q3 - is the LR coolant temp gauge in the D4 actually a working version unlike the D2 and its predecessors which started climbing as the engine was about to self destruct?

Q4 - I also have a penchance for knowing my ATF temp in the gearbox while towing, especially after reading the Ashcroft advice. I've heard conflicting stories as to whether my 6 speed auto has a sensor, with I think I recall a comment that the engine oil temp is similar and some use that????

Q2: Factory fitted coolant level sensor is fitted to the expansion tank. My experience says it works well. This is until the float gets full (or whatever happens) and it sinks therefore reads low coolant permanently.

Q3: Others will know this one better than me but the coolant temp guage must be on a range type set up. I watch my actual coolant temp via the gap tool move up and down without movement on the dash guage.

However, I have had both the above work as designed (I guess) when a dumped a load of coolant on the Kwinana Freeway. Low coolant first, followed by a temp warning and the guage going up. Shut it down straigh away. Fixed the problem, filled it with cooant and away we went, no worries. That was two years ago.


Q4: Transmission has a temp sensor. Can be read using the IIDGap tool.

Yep Later models (specifically 3.0L/ 8 speed) have transmission temp sensor, but I'm told not the 2.7 / 6 speed??

Guess I'll have to learn more about this GAP Tool I was given, along withthe RovaCom IQ.

Hi Gavin,

All the information I quoted is for my 2005 D3 2.7 TDV6. 6 spped ZF.

Only just got the D4.

Gavin, if you've not checked through available live values with the Gap iiD how are you sure there's no EGT sensor for the 2.7L ?

Dropped in on Darren today Gavin, your probe will be fitted to the RH ( drivers side ) manifold as there is plenty of room ( depth ) for the probe on that side.

As far as I know the 2.7 and early 3.0l share the same 6speed ZF. It has a temp sensor, as I read mine off the diagnostic tool when filling the tramsmission after a fluid chamge.

Q3. All coolant sensors report accurate temp to the ECU. The instrument pack has a range of approx 20-30 degrees where a temp within that range is considered “normal” eg 80-110degrees will read straight up on the dial. This is to stop people freaking out endlessly and pulling over etc when there is no need if the engine is operating within predefined criteria

I can’t find them on mine with my gap. IIRC There is an option in the menu but when selected no values are present. However, I wasn’t sure if it had to do with having the EGRs being blanked and cooling removed.
