View Full Version : Tyres for working

Well I may have just purchased a farm in NE Victoria which means that the 86’ finally gets to be put to work.
I have the original swb rims with bar tread tyres which are useless on wet grassy paddock hills. Can anyone suggest a suitable m/t Tyre option for these original rims? I am also looking out for a lwb series set of rims to give me a little more Tyre width as another option.

It really depend on how much you want to spend
IMO 235-255/85/R16 MT is the right size depending on your rim offset
I like BFG but at about $350 a corner fitted and balanced they are expensive
You can get the same size in no name brands for $200 but will they last?

Tyrepower got me a set of 235/85R16 Toyo OC MTs in for around $290 a corner. [emoji106]

Whilst I understand the price factor it is maybe worth taking tyres which are not heady duty (ply wise) otherwise the hard ride and limitations offroad will ruin the fun. m

Correct. Series 1 steering arms are noticeably lighter than Series 2a on. I have had a Series 2 steering arm on the bottom of the relay fail - on 7.50 tyres. I would be reluctant to fit anything wider than 7" (180mm) and even this is wide for the standard 5" rims.

Not a Series One but I got a set of Evergreen ES89 AT Tyres 215-85 R16 for my Lightweight from Tyroola @ $75 each yes $75 each . Fit 5" rims no problem , And im super impressed with them on & off road . Steep / Wet grass no problem.

Do you need radials? If for farm use, go 700r16 GT Radial XGrip tyres. Old school crossplies, nice chunky tread for paddock use. Only $170 each.

Maybe speak to ezyrama and get some 'tractor' tyres Ernest. (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/series-ii-and-iia/270730-ernest.html)

Would 7.5 tyres from a perentie be ok? There is a set with good tread available locally

Strictly speaking they are too wide for the original rims, are ex Perentie tyres any good on wet grass ?
Maybe a set of wider rims for the 'farm' tyres.

Sorry, rims AND tyres. I thought the wider rims would be an advantage

Sorry, rims AND tyres. I thought the wider rims would be an advantageThe only issue will be that the extra width is on the inside of the wheel, so they increase the turning circle with the tyre fouling on the leaf springs sooner...

Would spacers help with extra tire width and offset on 7.5 perentie tyres?

Better off with your bar treads IMO ,
Wider tyres will have lower ground pressure , you will lose traction easier on a wet grassy slope . Perentie is almost twice the weight of your SWB . 12 -14 ply tyres will be useless on your Series1.
I have these lightly used 6.50-16 STA Super Traxions , 6 ply that I probably wont be needing. One was a the spare & is brand new , others done about 2000km .
TBH the $75.00 Evergreen ES89 I got from Tyroola are better in all conditions including wet grass & mud, (on the car in the bottom picture)

Why not buy a later model Land Rover that's more suited to your needs/wants ?

If you can find some AYG8038 wheels these are 5.5" width but offset 0.5" further out than std 5.5" LWB rims. My 700r16 tyres rub on the rib on the side of the rear tub with std offset rims when flexed up.

It just so happens that I know where he could get AYG8038 rims. However , if I publish the location it's seen as advertising, so best send me a PM if interested.

700r16 XGrips on my 86".
Are they 14 ply? I had some on a Fj40 the ride was too harsh for me. Letting them down to 5psi would hardly bag the tyres at all, switched to Dunlop super grippers & all was good ( back when you could get them).

I need another landie like a hole in the head... and I like living in the house with my wife and not in the shed which is exactly where I’d be if I bought another project. This 86’ S1 has been destined for a farm for over 10 years and it is such a beautiful little vehicle. So, no plans for another model.

I run ex mil Olympic steeltrek?? tyres on a 2a workshop around the farm. They work fine at 15-20 psi.
They’ll be fine in your rims
