Hi all,

I'm looking to get a reversing camera and new head unit but cant get my head around the options and alternatives for a double v single DIN unit. I understand if I go with a double DIN then I need to do a lot more dash work whereas a single din with fold out screen should slot straight in so is a bit more appealing. See below;

Best Flip Out Head Unit & Stereos - 5 Products To Consider For 2019 (https://caraudiologic.com/best-flip-out-head-unit/)

A fold out unit will block a few dash buttons but I could relocate the rear wiper to an outer location and I shouldn't need the hazards anyway (I hope)

Anyone had any experience with the fold outs or is a double DIN worth the faff?

I put a flip out Pioneer unit in my RRC soft dash a while back and I liked it.

You don't have to worry about relocating the buttons behind the screen as you can press a button on the unit and fold the screen back in while it is still in use. You can still control the unit with the screen in with the use of the buttons and dial on the front.

We put in a Polaris double DIN unit sitting on top of the dash, fully installed with forward and reverse cameras and Hema maps. Very happy with it. Cost about half as much as pulling the dash apart would have, plus if we ever sell we can take it with us.

Sounds interesting. Any chance of a pic?

For anyone who has done a swap from the stock Alpine head unit to another brand are the plugs the same? Also, does the stock amp work on a different head unit (assuming similar specs).

In a change over I'd want to be able to pull one out and put a new one in with minimal faff.

I haven't done the upgrade yet, but it's on my list of things to do.

My plan is to use this double din kit:
Aerpro | First Choice (https://aerpro.com/fp8468)

And this head unit with reverse camera:
iLX-702D-CAM Alpine Electronics of Australia (https://www.alpine.com.au/shop/navigation/audio-visual-receivers/ilx-702d-cam/)

Alpine to Alpine switcheroo should be the same plugs, but if not, Aerpro sells a million different types of loom adaptors.
Looking forward to having CarPlay again.

I'd love to hear if anyone else has used that Aerpro kit, because I've had a search but can't anyone mentioning it?

Most LR's from late D1 up use iso plugs so some brands will plug right in or require an adapter loom which is only about $15-20 from Aerpro.

Thanks. I've been offered an Alpine head unit and a sub with amp from a D2 and I'm hoping the head will plug straight in to our Defender, which has an el cheapo head unit replacing the original.
