Hi guys,
Ordered a set of Johnson Rods a few days ago and now I am about to ring around and price a set of 5 x BFG ko2 tires. Hoping to fit 275/65/18 on standards rims, has anyone done this?
Also is it possible to tell if your timing belt has been change in a previous service? I have just purchased the car with 160k on the clock and want to make sure it has been done.
I do a lot of long distance trips with a young family and want to make sure the car is as bulletproof as possible so will be going over the car in depth over the next few weeks.

Service receipt or checking with whom ever serviced it previously. Presume you have this info?

Regarding tyres. There's heaps of threads on tyres. Use the 'google' search function on the bottom left of the page.
Based on the thread below. The widest 65 profile tyre you an fit is 265. Ive had the 285/60/18 and they work OK but do rub.
Land Rover Discovery 3 SE Tyres (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-discovery-3-and-4-a/222889-land-rover-discovery-3-se-tyres.html)
Also. I note that the link to GOE's tyre spreadsheet didn't work. Going directly to the website doesn't work either atm.

The belts are due to be done at 168,000km or 7 years whatever is the earliest - if you bought this car with 160,000km the odds are the belts have not been done and maybe that was the reason it was sold then to save on this cost.
As mentioned if you have no documentation indicating it has been done then you have to assume it needs doing.

Cheers guys,
Maybe go a smaller size on the tyres will do some research during the week.
Booked in for a timing belt Change tomorrow my local land rover deal has a discount price on atm of $1500 so will just get it done.
Also just climbed under the car and see the plastic transmission cover so I will source a metal pan and have a go at doing that myself maybe over the weekend.
Anyone know of supplyer in Perth?

Service receipt or checking with whom ever serviced it previously. Presume you have this info?I drilled a 1/2 inch hole in my timing cover above the L/H cam gear . Rotated the engine untill I csme across the belt markings. All timing belts have a manufacture date. I then plugged the hole with a blanking grommet. Now I know I've got 40 odd k to go.

Re tyres, plenty of info on here, the Wrangler duratracs are popular, as are the Maxxis 980’s, Cooper Zeons and Pirelly ATR, all available in 18 and 19” sizes. Pretty sure you know that the 2.7 can run standard 18” rims, the 3.0 can’t because of the larger front brake calipers.
definitely get the fuel pump belt done too, good deal if LR is doing that as well for the quoted price, there’s a fair bit of stuff to remove to get to it, so may as well whilst they’ve got access.
make sure they check the front engine seal (crank seal), they confirmed to me that they check and replace if it’s weeping, it’s a $30 seal, but requires about $1000 of labour to get to it, as both the accessory and timing belt has to be removed to get access.
check out Automac Transmissions | Perth's Trusted Transmission Specialists (https://www.automactransmissions.com.au/) or ring ZF in Malaga, they have a distribution warehouse (I forget the name atm) but you can get most parts online too, all genuine ZF. eBay is your friend. Plenty of info on steel pan and filter conversions on here too. Make sure you get the serial number off the transmission (passenger side up on the side) as this details which type. Your 2.7 should have the 6HP26 transmission, some may have the 6HP28, but they’re usually on the 3.0l as they’re rated for a higher torque value. Note that the same units are fitted to BMWs, just search for your ZF unit code online.

As said there are 2 belts, front and rear, allow $3000 minimum, best size tyre is 265/60/18, or if you can source some 17" rims(2.7l D4 can run 17" rims) you'll have a greater range of sizes and have the ability to have a more aggressive tyre on a second set of rims and save your 18s from possible damage when offroad.

So all went well with the timing belts today in and out in about 8hrs and both belts have been change. Checked the front engine seal and no problem there either.
Have been looking at the tires all day and have decided to go with the BFG KO2 275/65/18, hopefully i can get the spare to fit under the car after the upgrade.
Heading down to Automac Transmissions in the morning to talk to them about the transmission cover and filter upgrade, might swing past TJM and grab a redarc towpro and then Jaycar to see if i can sort something for the head unit and lack of Bluetooth music streaming.<br><br>Few other things i want to do next week are:
duel batteries
fit the Johnson rods (if they ever turn up)
fit 2way - have a old GME4500tx of one of my old cars that i want to fit
Mitch Hitch - if i can find a second hand one

Squigs- one thing you won’t be able to do with that tyre size....
If the compressor plays up or the vehicle drops - you won’t be able to drive it as the tyres will be jammed solid in the guards.

Hi Scott,
Half way through reading your build thread and see you have fitted the KO2 265/65/18, this might be my only option if that is all i can fit in the spare wheel carrier at this stage until i can afford some type of rear wheel carrier.
On my previous 4WDs i have always run 285/75/17 and always Mickey Thompson ATZ P3 these tiers got me around Australia twice with no punctures and about 80k out of both sets (rotated every 5k and always used correct pressures for driving type).
My biggest concern with the smaller tire size on the D4 is that most people fit the bigger tires to there cars now and unfortunately not all these people now how to use them, the amount of times i have come across tracks that have been rutted out due to the misuse of tire pressures still amazes me not to mention the amount of people bogged just because they do not have tire deflators or a compressor.
At the end of the day i think i need to trust the capabilities of the D4 and the traction control it offers.
P.S
Have emailed British American concepts and i will be getting the plug and play unit for Bluetooth upgrade.
cheers

There’s a lot more clearance under the D4 offroad.
Significantly larger tyres will cause nothing but issues with rubbing etc for very little gain.
Remember you don’t need to keep diff pumpkins out of the dirt.
I came from 33 & 35 inch tyre equiped vehicles and haven’t had a problem with smaller rubber on the D4.

is that most people fit the bigger tires to there cars now
Mainly jappers who do it for the looks and social acceptance rather than anything else.

Actually I'm running 265/60 which fits in the spare wheel well fully inflated without any difficulty and doesn't rub anywhere at any height or steering angle. It's true that many people run 265/65 or 285/60 including friends I wheel with but in my experience the benefit of going to those sizes is not enough. They don't get further on difficult tracks. All things being equal I get that bigger diameter is better and occasionally an extra 13mm helps but so far I'm happy with 265/60
Cheers,
Scott

So on a trip down to Margaret River and have noticed the speedo @ 120kph is only 113kph
The car has standard wheels on at the moment 255/60/18 is this a common problem. Also not a big one but the cruise control only goes up and down in increments of 2kph.
Have the Maxtrax and recovery gear with me so hopefully hit a few trails and some beach work while I am down here nothing to extreme till I get a handle on what the old girl can do.
Also the redarc towpro is installed thanks to the sticky zone threads.

Both of those are known.
If you get a Gap IID tool you can calibrate the speedo.
It’s not a fault - all modern vehicles are up to 10% out.

So the 265/65/18 BFG ko2 tires are on and got the spare in with 10 psi so was happy with that.
Have not fitted the Johnson rods as so far no rubbing, think I might sell them and get the Llams instead to save time.

It's powered through the ignition circuit (as you know). See attached.
You would need to run a new wire from an unused permanently powered fuse in the under dash main fuse box. But I'd recommend against that. Ideally, if you need to permanently power a circuit for running a fridge, battery recharge station, camp radio etc., then you are better of to do that from a second battery.
Most on here (me included) would recommend Traxide. I left the Landrover 12v ignition supplied plug alone and ran my Traxide cable to a new usb & 12v plug on the same side. I also power another 12v socket, battery charging station, additional interior lights and an ARB twin compressor via a marine fuse box. All powered by the second battery via Traxide.

Hi squigs83, before you do anything about a second battery install, please give me a call, or post up any enquiries you have, here in your thread.
I have just had a poor sole, with a D3, phone me this morning, because he was having problems with his setup.
He had quite literally been suckered into fitting a grossly over priced setup, that was not only not charging any of his batteries the way they should have been, but the setup was actually causing his cranking battery to be discharged, when ever he was parked up and still connected to his caravan.
Who ever had installed his setup had mounted a 120Ah AGM in the rear cargo area ( totally unnecessary ), then fitted a 25 amp DC/DC device to charge it and as if this wasn’t a big enough waste of money, they had run THIN cabling to power the DC/DC device, which is not charging his battery with out doing a long drive.
But to make matters worse, they had run the same thin cabling, UNDER THE D3 which is a big No-No, to another 25 amp DC/DC device mounted in his caravan, to charge two 120Ah AGMs
The only time the caravan batteries would charge, was when he used the caravan DC/DC to regulate his solar panels.
No amount of driving would allow the caravan batteries to get any charge and as above, if he left the D3 connected to his van, the DC/DC was discharging his cranking battery.
For a fraction of the cost, he could have had a far superior setup, that would actually work.
NOTE he was not a member here and did not know about the AULRO website. He does now.
Again squigs83, ask any question you have about a second battery install before you do it.

Then run a connection from your second battery to a plug to power your fridge or whatever. That way you will have constant power from the second battery, but the DBC will protect the first battery from being drained. To further improve the system, put a solar panel on the roof and connect it to the starting battery to keep it charged.

Will defiantly be going with the Traxide system in the next few weeks but as i live in Perth WA and have a trip to Tom Price via Coral Bay this weekend (very short notice moving for work) i just wanted a quick fix. I have a MDC camper trailer that i use for one fridge but wanted to put a second 40L engel in the D4 for baby stuff.
Drivesafe i will be contacting you very shortly on a system for the D4 just have to sort shipping to Tom Price once i get a permanent address.
Dont Suppose anyone Has a spare Mitch Hitch they want to get ride of in Perth WA area?[wink11]
Also for the people interested the BFG KO2's 265/65/18 have been amazing so far, did a beach run during the week and the D4 ate everything i through at it once i figured out the traction control has to be turned off after starting the car each time. Can this be changed with the OBD reader?

Bummer - looks like we will pass like ships in the night instead of meeting. We are currently overnighting at Pardoo Roadhouse - just north east of Pt Hedland, then all being well heading south to Onslow tomorrow (20th) and Ningaloo the next day, then slowly southwards via, Denham, Kalbarri and possibly Dongara/Mingenew to meet the cold. .

Hi Squigs, not sure if this helps but a month or so back, I was after engine oil for my RR and went to my local Supercheap Auto store and was trying to see which oil I needed.
An assistant ask could he help me, and I told what I was after.
He ask what engine I had in the RR and not being sure ( I wouldn’t have a clue ) he then suggested he could get the correct info.
He asked for my rego number and pumped it into the computer and he had all the info needed for the correct oil.
As above this might help you.

My advice is to stick to an oil that meets the Ford specification. That includes a couple of the Penrite Supercheap sells as do others. The manual has the correct oil spec to use, likely M2C913B/C but do check.

I’d suggest only using 5W-30 that meets WSS-M2C913-B or C.
I use Castrol Magnatec Stop-Start 5W-30 A5 in mine MAGNATEC STOP START 5W-30 A5 | Castrol MAGNATEC - Car Engine Oil | Castrol Australia | Castrol MAGNATEC Engine Oil | Castrol™ Australia | Castrol Car Engine Oils | Edge, Magnatec and GTX ranges | Engine Oil | Castrol Australia | Castrol™ Engine Oil & Lubricants - Castrol™ Australia (https://www.castrol.com/en_au/australia/car-engine-oil/engine-oil-brands/castrol-magnatec-brand/magnatec-product-page/magnatec-stop-start-5w-30-a5.html) Note there are several Magnatec 5W-30 oils, but only the A5 version meets the WSS-M2C913 spec.

+1 on that front. Penrite 5W30 C4 or C1 for me (non DPF). Change the grade at your peril. These engines are close toleranced and work hard,, they need thin oil at startup, especially the turbo bearings and top end.

And higher heat ratings, it's also good practice to change brands every few years as they have different additive packages for cleaning, I've seen Fuchs go into a aged fleet and they ate it for about 5000ks before they cleaned out. I've also seen Valvoline super blue wash an engine nearly to death. Had to be run real hard to get it to reseal the rings but it came good and the white smoke stopped afterwards
