Afternoon All,

What would be considered "essential" in terms of tools and spares for RTW overland travel?

A small block of wood to work on
wheel bearing kit x 2
spanner rolls, long and short with stubby ratchet ring set as these have saved me so many times
Big hammer and plastic lead shot hammer
big cold chisel
different sized shifters
screw driver kit
2nd cut file, hand smooth file with handle. can be used as a splint as well
pliers, side cutters, multi grip set
multi meter or test lamp
rolls of electrical wire
1/4 & 1/2 socket set
If possible 1/2 battery impact gun
penetrate spray
1 - 2 spare unis
wheel bearing and general grease tubs
tubes of sealant
that silver stretchy tape & gaffa tape rolls & elec tape rolls
wire brush - for general stuff & getting sand from between rims & tyres
a few packs of different size zip ties
4 strong ratchet straps
a flat heavy duty old cardboard box - folds up out of the way somewhere, used to lie on under car, can be burnt
a good size tarp with 100m strong chord
a good sized knife
roll of strong wire
bag of different sized nuts and bolts, washers etc
big plastic bags used for collecting water - fold flat - take up no space
fire lighting kit
small folding saw - Silky best brand to get
strong jack - use wooden block as base on soft ground
good torch & head lamp with spare batteries - best if they both take same size batteries
if possible EPIRB or PLB
fire extinguisher, bigger the better
first aid kit

Sounds like a lot but it allows you to do most repairs to vehicle
straps used for holding together damaged parts and building shelter
all other gear self explanatory - mainly focused on survival and handy around camp

I believe it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it
my 2 cents worth

we are currently planning a trip leaving beginning 2022

I think a well service car goes a long way, around the world tools isn’t much different to touring Aus for a couple of weeks.

Space is a big issue for us, we only have a 110, from memory you’re building a 130??

From micksta1973 list (save me some typing on the iPhone I currently carry

A small block of wood to work on (same one as jacking)
spanner rolls, metric/imperial
Big hammer
cold chisel
different sized shifters
screw driver kit
pliers, side cutters, multi grip set
multi meter or test lamp
rolls of electrical wire
1/4 socket set
penetrate spray
tubes of sealant
that silver stretchy tape & gaffa tape rolls & elec tape rolls
wire brush
a few packs of different size zip ties
4 strong ratchet straps (given I would have four from shipping if I’ll probably ditch two)
bag of different sized nuts and bolts, washers etc
Strong jack - use wooden block as base on soft ground
head lamp with spare batteries
PLB

I also carry at the moment
Hub nut spanner
Brake line spanner
Nanocom, we have a TD5
Couple of pairs disposable overalls.
1/2 drive breaker bar

Not sure I will carry many more tools,
maybe a spanner for the engine fan
I do need to throw in a 12point (13mm I think it is) socket for the brake caliper bolts

Spares, I’m scratching my head a little.......won’t be packing wheel bearing mainly based on I’ve never had one fail.

Filter set
Clutch master cylinder
TD5 fuel ??
MAF sensor??
Spare ECU, only cause I have one.

Been following grizzly and bear, they’ve had there fair share of issues and seem to get by with minimal spares and rely on sourcing when the issue arises.

What are the specifics of your trip?
Do you have a route roughed out, or are you going more free style?
How much preparation / are you going to do to the defender before you go?
Who are you going with, parter, kids?

Any real thoughts about realistic budgets yet?

Cheers, Jay

We’ve settled with the title Brisbane to London, where we live to the brides native country.

More than likely we will ship into Hamburg Germany and kinda wing it until funds run out.

I’m loosely working on shipping to Singapore and driving west as this seems more adventurous.

We will need to settle in a rough plan soon, I’d like two years, bride is leaning towards one year hence in and out of Hamburg.

We have a TD5 110HT with Mulgo Poptop......space is going to be tight, I was always going to wait for a 120 or 130 two door and convert to a wagon. Hopefully we can leave the MTB Bikes at home which will reduce gear. We will have a through hiking packs and equipment hence space issues.

Oh just the two of us......

For setup of the car, currently
- Mulgo Poptop
- 270 self support awning
- Standard fuel tank
- Shingle back sill tank, which will start as water while I decide which will be the greater need (fuel or water)
- standard main fuel tank 82L
- 60L water tank inside
- 60L fridge
- built in storage and food prep
- seating for two in the back, we need to keep lap seat belts for the country they require a host to be in the car with you I.e. China
- 4 gull wings fitted but only really using two
- have removed coil springs and fitted air springs, so handy for leveling.
- roof rack, mainly for solar
- PTO winch
- chem toilet

List of Additions
- diesel space heater
- long range main tank
- refit of the rear space
- arb locker in rear
- maybe convert the front springs to air

Pretty standard touring setup.

self amalgamation tape
Oils/fluid to top up till you get to help
