Rebuild 4bd1 fuel feed/lift pump?

I've had to replace this on one of the rovers twoce in 20 months. Was wondering if anyone has rebuilt them and if so, whether there are recommendations regarding a kit or parts, procedure, etc?

The issue started, I believe, because the old tank was flaking debris so this time I removed the tank and cleaned/sealed/replaced, then replaced the fuel feed line to be sure the diesel stays tidy. A few times I had lost power and been able to cleanout the banjo to get going again, but it was time to try and solve the problem.

Just in case, I'd like to rebuild the lift pump so it's on the shelf, ready, if ever needed again.

Must admit I have never had to rebuild one, but I would imagine it wouldn't be hard to do. I always carry a spare one on long isolated trips just in case. One thing I thinks help extend the life of the lift pump is to add a fuel filter in the line before the pump which catches all that crap that blocks the small lint filter in the banjo bolt.

I also fitted a plastic inline petrol filter, just to stop the lift pump screen getting blocked. It also allows you to see if there’s fuel in the line if there is a starting problem.

One thing you should also do is clean out the water separator. It does a good job at collecting bigger particles.

I've fitted a CAV fuel filter in place of the sedimenter. Filters are cheap and a decent size so won't block easily.
Quick and easy to change too if you happen to pick up some dirty fuel.

I haven't had to change or rebuild a lift pump, but can't imagine there would be any rocket science involved.
Its been a about 5 years since I did my water pump rebuild but at that time genuine rebuild parts for the water pump were still easily available. Hopefully the same case for the lift pump.

I initially did the same. Then I refitted the water separator as it does a great job as a pre-filter, picking up sludge and sand size particles like rust. I will probably refit my Racor filter one day.

Inline petrol style fuel filter are common fitted and ive often had issues with these resticting the fuel supply with small diesel engines.

Ive been fitting a stainless strainer from Case backhoe/cummings engine
as pre filters for lift pump. these are easy to back flush.

has 5/16 olive conection at one end, that fits to the fuel pump , and barb 3/8 at the other. I have seen similar with 5/16 olive fitting fitted to rover V8 after the mechanical pump but are NLA and its recomended a paper filter..

Same thing with 3/8 fittings each end are common as tank breather with heavy machinery if you have hoses that size.

I was getting a john deer mech [steel wool] strainer from a 5000 series tractor to protect a bosch rotary primer pump. these had quick snap on conections 5/16 my understanding these are genuine only. I cut plenty open and never had seen one contaminated. but it stops gravel.

I did a google looing for the other part numbers and found this baldwin part to suit 5/16 rubber hose conversion for that filter.
