View Full Version : How will it tow vs a D4?

Quite like the look of the new Deefer, and might be interested in one in a few years. A bit concerned about how it'll tow though, given the engine size. Currently have a 2013 TDV6 D4 and tow a 2 tonne plus camper van. I'm assuming the new Deefer won't be able to match the D4 in towing capability?
Cheers

SeanHard to say as none of us have driven it so anyone who actually comments on this will only be assuming.
In saying that the specs don't look great compared to a d4.

Interesting question, with the diesel i presume?
I have been waiting for someone who tows a block of flats with a D5 that has the latest D240 engine to chime in.
I mentioned the latest, because this engine has recently been detuned, due to emission regs,so they say.

That engine is not available in the 2020 Deefer.

Interesting that that engine has identical specs to the 225kW RRS SDV6 - even to the extent that the picture is of a V6 not an I6.
I suspect they are just using the Ingenium name on the SDV6!

The Ford TD V6 engines are gone, the completely different, and LR built Ingenium straight 6 diesel engines are replacing them.

Maybe, but the picture in that link is a V6!
Neither is there any information on that site that describes the engine other than 6 cylinder Diesel and Ingenium. Nothing about being I-6 on there - love to read about it if you can find it though.

So is the expectation that a 6 cyl diesel will eventually be made available for the new Deefer?

There's no expectation it's been stated in so many different discussions on this thread as well as from LR itself.
We just got back from a long chat about our order with the dealer and a few interesting gems came from it. First is there will be a bull bar. Quote "along similar design lines to the steel ones for D1 & D2", Yes designed to work with the optional Warn winch. Looks like a 12pin trailer plug same as D5 as well. Deliveries from June 2020 and cars to actually look at in May 2020, which is disappointing if the latter is correct. We chatted about the order bank and he said it's filling fast with a surprisingly large number of pre-orders already with deposits. His comment was that in 40 years in the business it's the first model he's ever experienced where the interest and orders started at 0830 on the morning of the launch.
Seems that LRA is holding up some orders for dealers due to a lack of detail on some specification and options. Still if we have to wait almost a year to get one there really is no rush.
We expect to have our final numbers and a delivery date by end of next week

I have actually know the bloke and dealt with him during my fleet procurement work for around 20 years. So yes I did actually believe him. Doesn't stop us from negotiating hard though

That engine is not available in the 2020 Deefer. Is this the straight 6 that they say will be released 2020 in the new defender?
If so when are first deliveries of these D5's or are there any in stock in OZ?

Dunno, haven’t heard of any larger diesel going in 2020 Defender?
Don’t know about D5,but latest Aus specs have the Ingenium diesel 6,not the TDV6.
It’s got great power/torque figures and very similar fuel usage ratings to D240.
It would be a good seller in 2020 Defender,IMHO,particularly in Aus,for those coming from TDV6 in D3/4,and other brands with larger diesels,as an example.

MY21 is a long way away,thats 2 yrs.
Oh well, hopefully by then any issues will be sorted.
I bet it has the big brakes and has a huge price premium.
I wonder what the premium is in D5,over the D240?
EDIt About $9K,looking at D5 prices on LRA site.

Landrover model years start around June the middle of the previous year - so MY21 will start about June 2020 - only 8 months away.

Agree.... looks like they have snuck the word 'Ingenium' in on the configurator only... elswhere e.g in the 20MY spec guide, it is referred to as SDV6 . I think the contract for supply of the Ford produced 'Lion' diesel engines (which come out of the Dagenham plant) is due to end sometime next year.... so maybe they are starting to update their collateral already ?

As I recall, and unless it has changed as a principle engineering design consideration, anything with Land Rover or Range Rover on it, off the show room floor has to legally be able to pull a loaded double horse float. [bigsmile]
