Hows this for a blown headgasket on a 89 rangie.
The heads have been reconned before I bought it and composite gaskets used but the head bolt torque was all over the place.

Zackly the same as my P38A - blown out the side. The car sounded like a chaff cutter and I had to drive it home (had I known that the NRMA would have flat-bedded it, I wouldnt have driven it).

That is a typical failure, often caused by the outside bolts pulling the head down on that side and therefore up on the other. So next time do not tightedn the outside bolts or better still leave them out.
You will see no involvement with water passages at all, so no inkling except that the crankcase gets presurised and oil starts blowing out everywhere.
The head of my 81 had been gone so long when I fixed it, that it had burnt a path into the alloy about 4thou deep.

Hello Pedro I have just checked all the other valves in the heads and they are all dished.
You just cant see from the pics.
Why they are dished
I cant answer.

they are all like that.....its normal....

and whilst you have the heads off....get the valves lapped in as well if you are
not getting the heads serviced.......

The heads have only just been reconned judging by the cleanleness of them compared with the rest of the block.
Dont get me wrong it dont look like the bottom of a dried up lake but I can see down the side of the top of the piston and see the rings, also on 1 half of the top of the bore where the ridge is is clean, the other side is black with carbon. Why u ask because there is that much piston clearance there was piston slap.
I now have a delema do I rebore and fit new 20 thou rover pistons, or do I rebore to suit the pistons and crank I have already that is a 4.2 stroker in my shed? As this is my sons car that I gave him I am trying to help as a dad. I also have a brand new reconned 3.9 complete long motor sitting in my spare room ready to fit. So do I give my son the 3.9 and keep the 4.2 for my original untouched 3.5 currently running in my 89 vogue on gas that will need repowering soon.
As I said I have a delema and I dont want to be a meanie.
There is another option as well.
I also have a buick 300 crank brand new pistons and rods complete with flywheel and harmonic balancer, this will give app 4.3 with a 10 thou over standard bore.
I will have to think about it for a few days

Mornin' Bradtot

not so much a dilema, as plenty of options:D

how much are you willing to spend,, on HIS car?

dump the 3.9 in and get him running?

or rebore/rebuild it as a father/son thing?

if he's never seen the inside of one, this last option might be a few lessons rolled into one---:)
