Hi Folks,
The snorkel attachement to the windscreen pillar was poorly done by L.R on my 2015 110.
When on the many corrugated tracks around Cape York the use of steel screws on an aluminium main body(Windscreen pillar) has caused them to vibrate to the point that the whole was enlarged and self tappers will no longer hold. I repaired whilst out bush with some two sided automotive tape (3M product used to attach truck body parts).
Now I’m trying to repair. Rivnuts seem a good idea however to get a decent size screw within the rivnut requires that the Rivnut itself is too large for the size of the pillar.
So, do I go back to Self Tapper or is someone able to enlighten me to a method I haven’t thought of???

Talking to myself here. What about filling the holes left with an epoxy and screwing into that, at least then the Aluminium of Pillar will not be damaged if same thing occurs again.
Otherwise every time the self tapper is vibrated out you need to go for the next size to get a 'Bite' on the metal??

Aluminium rivets could be your friend here, They seem to hold together well on boats that Live in salty water and suffer the vibrations and constant slamming/bashing about most boats endure[thumbsupbig][thumbsupbig]

This would be the alternative solution. Only risk would be the aluminium may fatigue from vibration.
I’d suggest slightly larger Self Tappers and a Sikaflex type material on the threads when installed.

I have used 6mm aluminum rivnuts on my Perentie snorkel and they are working well after 45k km, mostly gravel roads and off road

Rivnuts (Aussie terminology is Nutserts) would work very well.
Rivets would be at risk of fatigue.

IMO and Experience
Don’t over think this
Keep the m5 or m6 Nutsert in reserve.
For now, just go up a size in self tapper but slide a piece of 1mm rubber between bracket and a-pillar. Will help keep tension on screws and help with vibes

Yes, I was thinking the same. I’m using the Nutsert as I wait for some Two pak epoxy which is especially made for aluminium. I’ll then drill out the nutsert and use a self tapper. I particularly like the thin rubber strap as something is needed to absorb the vibrations without having them directly transmitted between pillar and Screw!

Sounds like it was lost as the standard fitment includes the rubber strap.

Same thing happened to me over a year ago.
I replaced them with rivnut insert and large ss and spring washer.
Hasnt come off since.

Nutserts FTW.
Self tappers are the work of the devil and have no place on a motor vehicle.
Cheers,
