View Full Version : Where are the air filters located on a D4

I drove through a grasshopper plague recently and now my D4 stinks of BBQ grasshopper puree! [bigsmile]

I got to work with the Gernie and cleaned off all the grasshoppers that I could find, but I figure they may have got to the air filter even though the vehicle has a snorkel. The air coming through the air-conditioning still stinks of grasshoppers.

I've had a look under the bonnet but it is not obvious how to get to the air filters.

Does the air-conditioner have its own air filter? If so, where is it located.

Any help would be most welcome.

Possibly the pollen filter.

The engine air filter is the black box at the RHS front of the engine bay and the cabin pollen filter is behind the passenger glove-box.

If in doubt read the handbook [thumbsupbig]

Might need to check under the cowling below the windscreen. Pull the rubber seal off around the inside rim of the engine bay below the cowling and you should be able to lift and see underneath.

Engine Air intake with a snorkel should not enter the cabin, so it has to be the pollen filter as this is the only fresh air intake into the cabin.

The radiators may be choked with hoppers and enough odour escaping from the engine bay to enter the cabin air intake.

That’s my thought. Baked hopper on the radiator

It will be a long process as I have found out. A few years ago I was travelling to Broome and before Halls Creek I ran into several swarms and made the car putrid.
One weekend I was able to get the car into the back of the hangar and started pulling the front apart, and they were in every nook and cranny. I cleaned out as best as possible without dropping the bullbar which I did when I got home to Coffs and had some spare time. I also replaced the cabin filter.
The other day I pulled the LH front inner guard lining off to change the brake wear sensor and there were still some desiccated remains still there.

I found my way to the pollen filter. Clean as a whistle - and no odour.

I'm still trying to figure out how to get to the engine air filter. I wish LR engineers were not nearly as smart as they think they are.

And no, I don't have a service manual!

I've cleaned as much grasshopper from the radiator as I can get at.

Open the bonnet, undo the air filter box top screws, lift off air filter cover?

Just don’t over tighten when refitting. [emoji106]

Manual is 16 bucks on this site. Engine air cleaner unlikely to smell in car.

Try it on recirculation. If it doesn't smell when you do that. Check out the air tract. Just under the windscreen. There is a drain there somewhere. If it's full of crap it'll smell inside and eventually flood

Some brands also make a black pollen air filter which is carbon. Helps kill smell

This will just be cooking bugs in the cooling pack, or on the engine itself. Once that starts cooking you’ll smell it everywhere!

One little thing people don't generally know.. smell is molecular. So what? you ask. So, if you smell grasshopper, you have actual grasshopper in your nose. Thing is, 'molecular' means the smell can pass through pretty much anything. (This is why it's impossible to fool dogs at airports.) Smell can pass through glass.

All the posts below are worth following up, as long as you understand that they won't work once you understand smells. Think of this: a fart stinks, yes? Well, it's best not to remember the molecular thing at that point.... 'Cos what you are smelling.., do I need to draw you a picture?

Wash your filters and enjoy the grasshopper. I would.

I get a stink in the D4 sometimes when using the screen cleaner, but not at others. I've checked the pollen filter and that's OK. Would think that if bugs were jammed under the windscreen it would pong all the time.
Meanwhile the Cook accuses me of being the source...... :(

AlanTH.What are you using for screen wash. That can pong sometimes. Stick your nose over the reservoir filler and have a wiff.

Using "bugs off" or something like that. Doesn't appear to come from there though.

What’s the consensus on changing the cabin filter in normal driving? Annual?

I do mine every two years typically though if I have one on hand at my annual service, I might do it then. I find them spotless generally so for me, two years works.

If you don’t drive a lot of dust they last quite a while.

You’ll know when it’s blocking as your airflow in cabin reduces.

Yep I just changed mine after about at least 18 months. It was noticeably dirty but no apparent change in performance.

Same for engine air filter ( which I tap out and vacuum every so often).

All good - I got the local LR dealer to do it. Changes the engine filter, cleaned the pollen filter, cleaned the engine, aircon and power steering radiators and turned a really beat up key into a brand new looking one - for $250.
