View Full Version : Anyone pulled apart a hinge?

Hi all,

I’ve pulled off my door hinges to replace the bolts and the hinges themselves are in surprisingly good condition so I’m getting them blasted and resprayed (powder coat).

Question is if there’s any nylon or plastic in the hinge assembly? If so this will be destroyed in the firing process and I’ll be without doors... ☹️

Thanks in advance

Dave

Depends on the year. Later hinges have plastic bushings.

It's a 1998 300tdi Defender.

The hinges squeak like they're metal on metal so I'm hoping that's the case.

There's a couple of tiny plastic grommets in the screw holes holding on the rearview mirrors but that's all the plastic I can see.

I'm doing the same with the rear door hinges too so if anyone knows if they have any meltable parts it'd be much appreciated!

I guess you will soon find out like I did some years ago, when I took a bucket of metal stuff/bits from my S2A to to be plated. Got it back & found the Aluminum Hinge pins in the Vent opting mechs had dissolved in the acid bath that they didn't ask me about (my bad) & they fell to pieces & were lost in the bath.

Good that you are asking though. Better to be safe than sorry.

According to this article they are metal on metal, but from memory the pins are grooved.

Ouch hope that doesn’t happen in this case 😳

Thanks DeeJay, yeah I read that article before I had a crack at pulling them off. On close inspection you can see the bushes, and giving them a cut with a knife they are certainly metal but I wasn’t sure if there was some other hidden plastic mechanisms inside and I wasn’t quite ready to knock out the pin to find out...

You can remove the pins, which would be better for the finishing process.
They are splined on on end.
Drive them out with a long nose punch.

No plastic on Tdi hinges as far as I'm aware, td5 onwards have nylon washers to stop that metal on metal action. Perhaps you remove the pin and could take a bit off with a file or whatever and fit a nylon washer in between to give them a longer happier life!

While the front hinges are off, pressure wash the firewall out and paint the cavity with rust converter/sealer.
I use slightly thinned/warmed fish oil.
Use a kero Gun at 100 psi.
It will mist clear out the other side and every hole👍👍

I would have done this except there's some speculation that everything could shut down in Vic around Easter so I needed to get them in the shop quicksmart.

I probably would have scratched the bejesus out of them putting them back together again too.. [bighmmm]

Thanks TOR, nice idea. The hinges are over 20 years old and still have very little play in them so I'll probably avoid any further dismantling at this stage.

Maybe when they're 40 years old!

Thanks modman this is a great idea.

Do you thin the fish oil with something or just warm it to thin it?

Do you reckon 150 psi would be too much? I've got a 12v compressor for my tyres and it's rated at 150psi.

A 12V compressor won't have enough flow for a spray gun.

I thought as much but thought I’d check.

I have not done Defender hinges but have done RRC 2 door hinges.
You should be careful to check the play with the door almost closed as the wear comes from the door weight and is asymmetric.

My hinges were worn and luckily I have a mate who ran the Cockatoo Island dockyard back then. He drilled out the hinges and made new pins from Monel and then splined them.
The problem is in doing this that the Pins are AFAIR 8 MM and 10 MM leaves too little meat on the hinges. So he machined the pins down to 9MM. There is no such thing as 9MM anything with a shaft like say a bolt.
This could be one size smaller like 7 Mm but I cannot exactly remember.
Doors were nice from then on.
