View Full Version : Removing foam insert in boot of 5 seater

Since I am locked up for a while, I have been coming up with ways to amuse myself... Always a worry!

Has anyone removed the foam insert under the false floor in a 5 seater. I have been thinking of installing an ARB twin compressor and air tank - I have the one in a box - in there, but the space is too shallow with the foam in place.

A few photos and some hints would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

It has been done, you could have a look at this (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/l462-discovery-5-a/266194-stumbled-across.html) post, which has a link to a Disco that has it removed (pictures 5 and 6 in the link). It shows you can put a lot of stuff in the area, but doesn't show it empty.

NT,

you need to remove the side rails and the metal cross brace at the front of the tray that holds the storage tray at the rear. That means the side trims need to be removed.

The box is sort of firmly located, but some gentle persuasion will get it out. It's a polyester foam (I think) that looks like styrene, except it is not brittle.

I'll see if I can find some photos of mine.

Thanks, Hugh Jars. I am always nervous pulling the side panels off... The battery side is easy - maybe I can get it out with only removing that side?

What are you doing with the space?

You can see I have removed the cross brace and the plastic storage bin near the spare winch.
In this photo, the side rails are in place, but without the plastic trims attached. Just remove the capscrews, and wiggle them around to free them from the front and rear trims.
The front lip of the box sits under the front cross brace, but there’s no need to remove it.
Once you have the 3 metal pieces removed, simply lift the back edge of the box (near the round bits in the middle), and pull the box to the rear to clear the front lip 👍🏻

Thanks again. What is the roundish thing to the left of the spare wheel winch?

And factor in adding some sound deadener as that lump of foam helps NVH [emoji41]. You may find a bit more noise with it missing.

I anticipated a change in NVH, but I hope I can use something a bit thinner...

NT, I drove around for a few days with it out, and there is definitely a noticeable increase in road noise, combined with noise from the compressor and air suspension when it was doing its thing (air whooshing around from the air tank etc).
I didn't have the floor in, and I imagine that alone would alleviate the noise somewhat. Replacing the foam tray makes a significant difference. that's why I decided to do that and work the storage around it.

Thanks, Hugh Jarse.

My plan is to make a 19mm light weight ply replacement for the floor so I can install some T-nuts to mount tie downs for the auxiliary battery and fridge and assorted stuff. That should be a reasonable noise damper.

Fit some CarBuilders gear into the well. Then mount your parts, then foam attenuation sheet and finally some heavy vinyl.

Vehicle will be quieter than before [emoji6]

Dear Numb Thumbs,
You could have a look at GPI Velocity Sound Deadening sheets, they are self adhesive and could be cut to fit.
Hope this might help with your NVH concerns.

Glenn.
