DVD Help needed

I've got a couple of DVDs that nothing seems to play (they were sent out from the UK for my father).

I can see the files on the disk
DVD has a volume label of MEI_UDF
and a folder named DVD_RTAV which contains 3 files
VR_MANGR.BUP
VR_MANGR.IFO
VR_MOVIE.VRO

I know they are not the normal DVD set and as I said I'm trying to work out what they were created with (or even if its a complete set) then I might be able to re-burn them so he can watch same.

Any help appreciated.

Hi Bushie
Its possibly the "region code" thats causing probs.
Cant know how you get around it,but we have been given pirate DVDs to watch that have worked on other machines but dont on ours.Apparently there are ways of unlocking the region code on a DVD player but I think it involves visiting a "shark" at weekend markets.Same thing with Playstation etc game consoles.

If this was a compiled DVD disc, meaning a disc that's capable of being played through a home DVD player it would only contain TWO folders;
1. VIDEO_TS
2. AUDIO_TS

This obviously does NOT, so it would suggest that's a Disc containing some Video footage shot on a DVD camera....Yes ????
If so, it will be in the cameras' native format.....Home DVD will have no idea how to transcode them..

try this for an experiment, try playing this DVD in your Computer using Apple's QUICKTIME PLAYER(downloadable for free), or REAL player(also downloadable), Windows media player will NOT be able to play these....

Let me know how you go with this, and we will narrow things down further....cheers...

OK narrowed it down a bit further,

The .VRO file will play in windows media player.

It is a movie that has been recorded on a DVD recorder. (maybe not finalised)

Now I only have to work out how to convert it to a compiled ? DVD that will play on a home player.

DVD decrypter didn't seem any help and DVD shrink won't recognise it because its not VIDEO_TS etc.

Howdy: The key is the filename MEI_UDF.

Those videos were written by somthing in UDF format. Most probably a DVD RAM type recorder. (Panasonic?)

where they discuss ways to convert the main file - the vro you have- to somthing managable.

If windows will play the vro file, maybe your video editing tool ( Nero or Ulead?) will recognise the video file and you can import it to make your own DVD. Then it will be in the right format for generic DVD players.

Now you know where it came from, you should be able to convert it back to regular DVD

I managed to track down a trial copy of TMPGEnc DVD Author 2.0 which will read the DVD RAM and convert to "normal" DVD files.

Have to tell the old man to make sure he's sent DVDs he can play in the future.
