View Full Version : Can’t fit SVX alloys on my County. Please help!

Hello wise forum.

I have an 85 county that I want to put SVX alloys on. I took it to a tyre service centre who said they don’t fit because of the drive flanges. The drive flanges are Maxi Drive ones.

I called the company that now produces Maxi Drive stuff. They said that although they modified the design of their flanges to accommodate alloys, my particular drive flange is bigger than most others and therefore it won’t work with alloys.

I did lots of research here and came across this comment...

“Have your wheel studs got the slash across the end of them? Some/early hubs won't take alloys properly, irregardless of Maxidrive stuff.”

Having a look at mine they do indeed have the slash across the studs. Bugger.

I’m not sure I want to return the drive flanges to standard as the benefits of the HD ones make them valuable to me.

I would be happy to grind material away from the inside of the alloy but won’t if it degrades structural integrity.

Can anyone suggest a work around for my problem? Hopefully one that doesn’t cost me much.

Have you tried fitting a rim with the drive flange removed to confirm its only the flange that’s the issue?
Maybe buy a new set of the latest Maxi Drives and on sell the removed ones to help off set the cost if the current ones can’t be modified.
I would remove any material off the rim as the are a hub centric fitting.

Failing the above, I’d machine the flanges if it’s possible [emoji41]

some alloys dont fit the maxies because of the axle cap nut configuration, if you hit this problem you're basically stuffed, either the maxis go or the rims do (and I suggest the rims because the only ones I've seen that have this problem look camper than a row of tents at madigra,) if youve got the old school hewn from a block of granite with a bandsaw style maxies and its the edge clearance thats the issue, these can be machined back to suit the rim however I wouldnt as I prefer the ease of removal of the flange thats offered by the levering purchacse on the back of the flange over look pretty rims that offer no major mechanical advantage compared to stock rims.

I had exactly the same issue with my 110 with standard hubs
Apparently the early 110 hubs up to tdi200 Defenders had bigger hubs

I only bought them because they had good tyres (Continental Cross Contact ATR 235/85/16 at over 80%)

Swapped them onto some disco rims and sold the SVX rims to a local independent for a couple of hundred less than what I paid for the set

Ended up with good tyres just not the bling

No big deal, I don’t look at the rims when I’m driving it anyway

When you look as good as I do [emoji6]
No need for flash rims to make the car look any better 🤣

Get a flap disc onto the hubs, had to do it to fit D1 steels onto my 81 RRC years ago.

I know someone who fixed this issue with spacers. Legality is a concern though not for him as he was taking it overseas.

Alloys do not fit early, wide flange axles without spacers.

I was able, with minimum grinding or routing ( can't remember which - perhaps both? ) off inside the rim, fitting alloys to a maxi hubbed '85 County.
