Our younger D4 (155k km) has some severe paint rub on the top of the lower half of the split tailgate.

The rubber seal seems to be in place and intact on the face of the top half.

Is this a common issue and any causes or methods for resolving?

Yep. I have the same. Haven’t bothered to try and do anything about it

Our other D4 which has an extra 20k km has absolutely no paint rub at all. Park them side by side and compare and I cannot see any differences or reason for the white one to be experiencing this.

try some "De Solv it" on the rubbed area to remove the rubber (not too much as this stuff can remove paint as well) same on the rubber seal and then coat with Mr sheen furniture polish.

You may need to adjust the tailgate hinge a bit as its squishing the seal too hard against the body. There are adjuster screws at the top of the hinge to change offset. The door should lie flush or just proud of the rear quarter panel, and check if is square to the opening, the gap on both sides should be equal.

Dealer fitted some 3M film on the contact points on mine to prevent this.

Yep that’s the preventative fix however in dusty corrugated conditions that’s when the chaffe is at its worst
