Try to use the same oil that is in the engine, that is if you know what it is.
If not use any oil as per specs in vehicle service book.

What oil should I use.I wonder why you should be needing to top up the oil. What oil change interval are you doing?

Only if it has a DPF, which I doubt it does.
The oil needs to meet or exceed Ford spec WSS—M2C913-B Or C for a non-DPF vehicle, or Ford spec WSS-M2C934-B if it has a DPF.
How do you know if you have a DPF?
Check the eighth digit of the VIN, F & N is without DPF, G & M is with a DPF.
Or have a look at the exhaust as it passes under the passenger footwell.

Is it correct if in doubt choose the DPF oil and it will work fine in a non-DPF vehicle?

OK, so I did as I was told here, and looked up the handbook for the spec. Armed with said spec - I toddled off to SuperCheaper to buy some oil.
I found myself faced with 100's of different oils - none of which said anything about the required spec.
Penlite Ready Reconner did suggest one oil - but they only had a 5 L bottle, ie 10x what I required.
So I went to my local dealer - who topped it up at no charge. The oil they use is "Castrol EDGE Professional C1 5w-30".
My vehicle is serviced at rough 10,000 km intervals and its due for a service. I didn't have time to get that done before and unexpected trip. The oil level sensor thingy said that it needed 500 ml - so I had it topped up. Never done that before.
