View Full Version : Defender Drive-by-Wire Accelerator

Does anyone know if the drive-by-wire accelerator in Defenders (mine is '99 Xtreme) can be reconfigured?

I find that, in high range, there is no response at all for the first few centimetres of pedal travel, then I get what seems like all of the acceleration over a very short distance of subsequent pedal travel.

Has anyone else found this a problem? Tend to find myself stalling a bit or revving it a bit more than is necessary.

Is it just a matter of getting used to it?

It's a PITA & it was changed in later years. If it's the scenario I remember, you can't even blip the throttle when double de-clutching, it just won't respond.

Solutions? Search for the threads on the clutch mod, pulling that connection might help. Other than that, it's an update to a later ECU I guess.

Gas - I have a Bruce Davis chipped vehicle and know that there is a "throttle Track" setting that can be modified when setting up the computer (there are basically 2 sensitivity settings). Dont know if a standard computer has this facility. Have played with this at Bruces workshop and the settings make a massive difference to throttle response at the pedal.

Mine is chiped and I find the same thing. But get the right point early on and wow its like someone lit a fire under its ****.

As far as I was aware that was designed like that so there was more control in low range:cool:

Yes but only in low range. The ECU alters the throttle input for highway (high range use).

Im sure this has come up before,the cure was to select lowrange and re select hi range to reset the computer.
perhaps being chipped confuses the computer somewhat????

Just be careful when changing the settings.

You have a completely different fuel map for low range and fiddling with it can change your low range throttle response. It can become like a light switch (either on or off!!!). You can also get excessive surging....

From the disc:

In the event of a TP sensor signal failure any of the following symptoms may be observed:
Engine performance concern.
Delayed throttle response.
Failure of emission control.

If the TP sensor fails, the engine will only run at idle and the MIL will remain on until the fault is eliminated. Turning the ignition off/on can reset the MIL provided that the fault has been rectified.
