New Defender - 19 or 20 inch wheels

Hi There,

I am considering placing an order for a new Defender 110 D300 shortly ( April delivery next year ) and I am in a dilemma on which wheel size to order. Unlike my present D4 with 18" compomotive wheels, I don't really want to go to the expense of retro fitting 18 inch wheels to the Defender when available.

So do I just settle for factory 19" wheels and put a set of Goodyear Duratrac 255/65r19 on or do I get 20" inch factory wheels with a lower profile but a far wider choice of 255/60R20 good all terrain tyres.

Planned use for the Defender will be suburban school runs, around the farm, through rivers/creeks, occasional fire trail and the occasional day 4WD trip around Walhalla.

Interested in all different views and thoughts.

Or get the D250, with 18", and hope BAS or otherwise come up with a remap to bring you back up to D300 outputs...

Wonder what the wheel offset requirement is on the new D300 ? Assume stud pattern would be the same.

Unlike my present D4 with 18" compomotive wheels...

If you're comparing your 18" wheels from your D4, you need to consider the D4 has 30" diameter wheels and the Defender has 32" diameter wheels. For the standard tyre sizes, an 18" wheel on your D4 with 255/60R18 tyre will have the same 152mm sidewall as a 20" wheel with 255/60R20. Details are in the below tyre comparison screenshot.

If you are already ok with the sidewall size on your D4 for your planned use, then you're probably comfortable to choose the 20"option with the same size sidewall. Also, if you choose 20" then there's no need to modify the brakes on the D300 to get the 18" wheels to fit.

As you have stated, there's far more choices in A/T tyres for 20" v 19", but there's even more choices and availability in 18", particularly in the outback.

The KO2 's on my D4 have about 5 months of wear left. So if the compomotive rims on the D4 ( offset ET 44 and same PCD ) fit the new D300 I would replace the old tyres with new 255/70R18 tyres - to keep same rolling circumference i.e. 32". I still have the original wheel/tyres off the D4 - so I'll refit them to the D4.

But ultimately I'll just need to physically trial fitting the comompotive on the D300 hub.

This doesn't directly address your question but....This bloke is a POM in Canada who has recently started posting about his new defender. He's green oval fan and owned a number of LR Models. He's been doing a few vids and this one about trying different LR rims. Interesting exercise and some good views of clearance issues etc.

If the GOE's don't fit you could take the tyre size up 1/2" to 1" on the 20s to get a bit of extra sidewall.

Anyway he does love a "chat" but that's good because you find out stuff like the fact that the EPB release is in the engine bay (found in the oil change vid):

No probs, the reason I thought the vid might be interesting is he has some good close ups of how the various rims fit and what obstacles you might encounter when trying different rims. Looking at the vid from 16:35 he shows what would stop you from fitting the GOEs or any 18s for that matter. I wonder if, whatever it is, can be removed. Probably should have given you the simetamp upfront to save you some time [biggrin]. BTW his is a P400.

after some modifications to the rear brakes (sdv6 D5 calipers retro fitted) and they were Tuff Ant alloys.. that was done by Lucky8 in the good ole US of A..
fettling with the brakes is a risk to far for me personally, especially around insurance and vehicle compliance.. so will stick with the 255/65 R19 fitment [bigsad]

Did you keep the original 255/65 r19 tyres the Defender came with or fit a set of Goodyear Duratrac tyres ?

Also did you get 3rd row seats and if so is there much leg room ? I'm still pondering whether to order the D300 with 3rd row seats or without - hoping there maybe extra storage area where the 3rd row seats would have gone ?
