G'day chaps! We have a Disco 3 with tow hitch installed, but no key. Is there a way to get this off without the key? Or would I be best to go see a locksmith to get a key cut, if that's even a possibility?

Thanks!

If you look on the key barrel there will be a number. This is same key type as genuine LR roof racks if you have them.

LR racks are Thule racks. If you go to a Thule roof rack shop they sell replacement keys quite cheaply.

This may be one solution if numbers match.

In my case I bought LR roof racks that had no key in the box. I had a huge set of keys for all the fly screens and windy windows on our house. They have similar barrels with numbers and I got lucky one of the key sets work on my roof racks.

When I say ‘works’ it takes a little bit of jiggling and fussing compared to the exact key but good enough.

Punch out the sping pin, remove green knob, put a nail or similar through hole and pull out and turn to remove hitch.

You can buy new knobs with key for about $30 - $40. There are two different types make sure you get the right one.

Thanks fellas! Gives me something to work off, great!

Just a massive PIA getting spare wheel off/on with the hitch in the way. Particularly now with a larger tyre on the rim.

Cheers all!

When i bought my D4 it had no key for the green button on the tow hitch. Went to a local locksmith, they id'd, cut and gave me two keys within 20minutes, cost about 25 bucks. No need to destroy your tow hitch or use keys that "almost" fit.

I bought a replacement key for my tow hitch off ebay. the only problem is it's not a folding key like the original so you cannot store it in the space designated for the tow hitch (in the 5 seater... I have no idea where it's stored in the 7 seater). but that's easily fixed...

In the 7 seater it lives in the lh rear cubby hole (when standing at the tailgate looking into the car) in a special foam cutout.

While you have the hitch out, would be a good idea to give it a service (lots of info on the forum, some of it even correct), and smear a poofteenth of Neverseize goop over the wedge when you put it back, so you only need a small hammer to get it out next time. The other thing I recommend is using a D4 hitch, which is a bit shorter and actually lets you remove the spare tyre without adding too much to the blue haze.

I bought replacements for both our D4's that came without the keys from 1D Series Tow Bar Keys - Replacement Keys Ltd (https://www.replacementkeys.co.uk/1D-series-tow-bar-keys.html)
