Hi all, make it short, I enjoyed the 1st bump start last night 30kms away from home with my D2a and successfully drove her home and dead on driveway now waiting for a new starter motor. Good point is I now know that my D2a is sooo very easy to do bump start. :)

My question is which way to go? A Used Denso (which I will replace all new parts for the solenoid as I already bought one) or buy New aftermarket starter motor without brands?

Thanks for giving me your thoughts.

Denso, I've been down the aftermarket track and returned to the same as you're considering, s/h Denso.

Why not simply refurbish the one you already have in the D2[thumbsupbig]

Thanks for that. It happened the same on my MAF, trying an aftermarket MAF and it died in 1 day. Then pocket a VDO and very happy since then.

I need the car back on road ASAP, and I can't see this is possible and it is expensive to rebuild the starter motor too I believe

Quite a simple job to replace the brushes, solenoid and the bearings which you should be able to do yourself and not that expensive either.
The biggest job is getting the starter out and back in again which you will have to do regardless of what you decide to either replace or repair the starter.

If you decide to use a second hand starter then there is no guarantee that that one won't die on you as well.

Check the solenoid contacts before fitting the 2nd hand starter. If worn replace with For Land Rover Discovery Defender TD5 2.5 Diesel Starter Motor Repair Fix Kit AU | eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/For-Land-Rover-Discovery-Defender-TD5-2-5-Diesel-Starter-Motor-Repair-Fix-Kit-AU/132951495378'ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649) Ensure full contact is made before tightening the posts.

seeing you already have the repair kit, it'll take you 5-10 minutes with it on the bench to fit, even if you just replace the contacts it will be years before you will have to do brushes, bearings etc.
I'm seeing them last 2-3 sets of contacts before having to do brushes and bearings.

Ashdown and Ingram auto electric wholesalers have the parts you need to replace the solenoid parts, some kits on ebay are are not exact fit on the plunger diameter, they are close but not purpose built for the model starter.

Well. I'm still #$@%$&*$@#$% under the old girl now.

1st learnt. The ONLY combination of tool to get that top 15mm nut out is the middle option. It is nut, really.

2nd. Ok. It still is a pita to get the starter out.

3rd. My biggest problem now is the main battery cable dead stuck and rotate on the side due to that terrible contact inside the solenoid. I don't want to cut this super thick and SUPER SHORT cable. Grrrr.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210304/c4e53ab0971e5d7b448eeb49ec8e8317.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210304/ee6cefb878348359b1a62d24d0637144.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210304/dcb090e5e38ffe9cb36b37c7f521ebb8.jpg

What a joke when remove this starter in this terrible solenoid contact condition. I have to rebuild that main cable terminal, no choicehttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210304/d3d59fee4c48ce1a93d4fc58d415e1d9.jpg

The inside of the contact is square for a very good reason, You needed to hold that square end with a spanner so that you could undo the nut holding the cable without destroying it [thumbsupbig]

Darn it! I've read this thread. Now I think I'd better get out my spare and do it up, cos of that Murphy bloke. If I do it up, I won't need it.

judging by the way that post is, it looks like you were tightening it , even if not and for future reference, it doesn't matter if you break the post stud when undoing it as you get a new one in the kit, this would save you cutting the lug.
I see lots playing up long before the contact is as bad as that one.............that is cactus

Correct as I could see it is locked by a 15mm spanner, and I tried hard too. However, under the car with an upside-down hanging starter motor that also scared me that it would damage 2 copper pipes on the sideway, and already too hard to put 2 hands doing that job unless I do have 3rd hand. No choice for me.

I took apart today and all look good except brushes are very worn out. Might be rebuild to see if it works well later, in the meantime still urgently need the car back on road.
