I have rooted on of my M/T tyres. Is it ok to buy the same size tyre, with a different tread pattern?

You can, it's just not ideal for proper handling and it makes the diffs and centre diff work a bit but there isn't really much you can do about that. The rules just say that they need to be the same size and construction.

Most reputable tyre shops don't like different tread pattens on same axle, even though they maybe the same size, type and construction.

This will be the spare tyre. However... The tread on the photo is a mirror image of the tread on the tyre, this could be a photo issue.

Stand the new tyre next to one of the (preferably deflated) existing tyres. Tyre sizes are nominal, varying in actual size between makes and even types of the same brand.

Absolutely when they're selling you a set of tyres, but they will also replace a ruined tyre without replacing the set. It's just the nature of using the spare tyre.

Deflated ok! A radial split in the inner sidewall. The diameters are the same.

The tread is identical, size etc. identical. The only difference is the name on the side wall. And the price.

Tyre sizes can vary so much at times even between batches.
The Dunlop Motorsport blokes used to run a stagger tape over every English made race Dunlop and sold them as matched pairs.
They could vary by nearly 1" in diamater for a nominal size. This was their batch variation!! [emoji50]
Interestingly Japanese made Dunlops were much, much tighter in production tolerances.

Yes i remember those days.....all they had to do was get two things correct, make em black and make em round...they all got one right [bigrolf]

The tyres last about 5 years, maybe. The ones that don't go pop! I have had 2 go pop. They get a hell of a work out at times. The one I replaced had a radial split on the inner side wall.
I wonder about the cost effectiveness and traction of the cheaper ones compared to the others.

Avon were much tighter in their production batches too, but vary they do.
