View Full Version : Blanking Oil Cooler

I have removed the EGR and now wish to rid the EGR cooler. I would also like to remove any unnecessary pipework.
I know there has been plenty of discussion about blanking off the oil cooler outlet. I have had an extensive search and can't seem to come up with anything conclusive.
Has this mod been proven to be ok. I know that the pipe from oil cooler is for EGR cooler, but was wondering does this also aide oil cooling.
On the pre EU3 models the pipe just runs to the bottom of radiator. If removing and blanking the cooler outlet is ok, why did LR run this hose to bottom of radiator in the first place?

As I understand it, originally the radiator was partitioned so there was a separate tank at the bottom of the radiator for the fuel cooler circuit. LR later changed that to “improve the durability” of the radiator. The current spec rad has the oil cooler connection at the bottom of the rad blanked off which effectively creates a “dead link”. A search of my past posts will find the related Tech Bulletin.

As for it being ok, the last of the D2's came with the outlet blanked from the factory. [emoji6]

Thanks Rick.
I suppose that then confirms that it is ok for this mod.

Not sure you're correct on this Rick, I think it may apply to the later Deefers only. My D2a is one of the very last, May 04, and it had, until last week, the full EGR cooler circuit. It no longer has it as I've removed the EGR and cooler and capped off the coolant outlet from the oil cooler.

Well, all I can say is that my D2a had the full EGR cooling circuit. The oil cooler outlet wasn't blanked or I wouldn't have had to cap it. I've still got all the hoses from it and I replaced the header tank with an Allisport at the same time. This meant that I didn't have to blank off the hose connection for the EGR. When I pulled the intercooler out to replace it with an uprated Serck, it had a manufacturing label on it that had May 04 as the date.
Anyway, we're talking about Land Rovers, so go figure[tonguewink].
