Possibly manifold

Hello learned people,
Over got an issue with my td5, it makes a noise at about 2250rpm, very precisely, sounds like something thin is rattling, it's a metallic nose, I've re riveted the heat shield and been down the exhaust checking for movement beyond the expected, no joy.

I was under the impression that a warped manifold would make a whistle noise, could the rattle be that, would the exhaust be leaking enough I can go looking for soot?

Only had the car about 4 months, loving it, but I've had enough land rovers to know I should go looking for the problem before it comes looking for me.

Any suggestions on what to check would be gratefully received

Loose handbrake shoes.
Pull the handbrake on a notch while it’s rattling and if it stops will confirm.

From what I have read around the place what your describing sounds more like the harmonic balancer

No, brake shoes.
You will have to buy new ones and weld the backing plate where they indent.
I posted photos several years ago but I must have deleted them.

To test pull the handbrake on lightly when you are at 2250RPM . I bet the chorus will stop singing.

Thanks for all the replies, I will be trying the handbrake this evening after work, if that's what the problem is I will try adjusting in Friday and look at getting some new shoes at the weekend if that helps, the handbrake is currently where the previous owner set it, about twenty clicks of upward travel but does hold very well.

Only problem with the above PDF is that it is almost impossible to fit the "red " strong springs, seeing there is a bloody great damper behind the backing plate. I have a set somewhere and I gave up and fitted the old ones, and they have lasted 7 years without noise return. I doubt you could get them anywhere now anyway. I tried for hours but couldn't get the 1/2 turn cup to engage as I couldn't hold the pin enough get the cup to the turning point..

I just replaced the linings again because of the normal leaking rear seal, which I now have to replace again because the flange had a wear mark and its leaking again. AGGGGGH.

If you don't want to buy a new backing plate you can fill the grooves with weld and grind it back, which is what I did. You can leave it a bit higher than stock and that achieves tightening of the springs.

Well I had a play with the hand brake on the way home, supported the rattle with a bit of pre tension, so I've tried to adjust the travel back to where it should be and I will start looking for the parts to do the repairs.
