New MY22 D5 D300 on order. Wheels, tyres and AC questions ...

Hi all,
Having enjoyed our MY11 D4 for many years, we have decided to upgrade and placed an order for a new D300 HSE earlier this week. Excited, but am told a 10 month wait [bawl]

Anyway, I am rethinking some of the options after perusing AULRO! Only ordered this week, so should be able to change if needed.

Current order is for Fuij White HSE D300 with:



Active rear diff
Twin-speed transfer box
Front opening sunroof
Black roof rails
Tow hitch
Tyre pressure monitoring
22inch S5124 Gloss Black wheels


I have read with interest comments regarding the 3 zone climate system here. We decided to just go with the standard air conditioning, but am now rethinking optioning the 4 zone given the comments on this site. Do others find the standard system is sufficient in Australia with kids (and dog), or should we go for the 4 zone?

We also deliberated long and hard on the wheels. We do some trips and offroading, but realistically spend 95% of our time on roads. Ultimately decided to go with the 22's and will probably pick up a second set of 20's or 18's when we need them. This might seem an odd choice given we are putting the active rear diff and dual range in the car, but the HSE comes standard with 21's, for which there seems to be very few (if any) AT options, and it seemed a little silly to go with the 20's given we spend most of our time on the tarmac. Ironically, there also seems to be at least a couple of AT choices in 22", where I can't find any in 21". I am aware that these don't really offer any sidewall to speak of, but I see Nitto do a 285/45R22 Terra Grabber G2, although not sure if it will scrub as it adds 28mm (3.6%). Would be interested in your collective thoughts on this as a plan. Am I missing anything? Have any tried this tyre for fit?

Holy **** - 10 months?! You'd almost be up for the MY23 by the time you get it wouldn't you?

Does your D4 have rear air? This might help decide if you need it in the D5?

I put bigger tyres on my 20" rims and the ride improved noticeably.

I am running 275 55 20 Nitto Ridge Grapplers so clearance on the 22's wont be a problem although ride quality wont be as good.

Crazy right! The dealer did say that 10 months is worst case scenario, so could be sooner. I think they are setting expectations :)

We didn't option extra air in the D4, but it is the HSE, which certainly has additional controls in the 2nd row. It also has a 2nd on/off for aux air on the front console, so I think that the HSE at the time must have had a 2nd compressor as standard.

According to Rim & Tire Size Calculator. Custom Offsets - Wheel-Size.com (https://www.wheel-size.com/calc/?wheel1=285-45-22X9.5ET45&wheel2=275-55-20X9.5ET40&fcl=50mm&wcl=30mm&scl=50mm&sr=0mm), the 285/45R22 are only 4mm larger that the Nitto's that you are using, so should be close.

If I were to get another one I would consider getting the solar attenuating windscreen, due to the more raked and much larger windscreen compared to the D4 it gets hot very quickly inside. But the 3 retrievers in the boot never complained about it being too hot. On hot days, I remote start mine to cool the interior down for a few minutes before getting in.

If I were to get another one I would consider getting the solar attenuating windscreen, due to the more raked and much larger windscreen compared to the D4 it gets hot very quickly inside. But the 3 retrievers in the boot never complained about it being too hot. On hot days, I remote start mine to cool the interior down for a few minutes before getting in.

Thanks Ron. Interesting point regarding the windscreen. So many options! I've decided to just bite the bullet and get the 4-zone AC. For the sake of a bit extra, I don't really want to run the risk of the car being hot all the time. I'm not going with the solar attenuated windscreen, because we tend to park undercover most of the time.

My two bob's worth...

I have a 19MY with 20" rims. You will find the ride better on smaller rims and the range of AT tyres is also pretty good - especially compared to 22" rims. I drove straight from the dealer to a tyre fitter and swapped the original road tyres for Nitto Terra Grapplers in 275/55R20. They are as quiet as the original tyres and are a good AT tyre - not for rock hopping, stick with the Ridge Grapplers for that, but you cop a big weight gain.

Like most people, I spend most of my time on bitumen so I did not want a really heavy tyre - the extra unsprung weight was a worry. I run the tyres at 32 psi front, 34 psi rear around town and slightly higher loaded up on bitumen. I can drop them as far as 16 psi if I have to.

I've got the solar windscreen and while it certainly blocks the heat............I've had more stone chips in 3 years (and one new windscreen as a result) than in my whole driving life. Could be a coincidence of course.

At 3k replacement cost its worth ticking that option on your car insurance.

Yes. I did think about the solar windscreen as well, but the options list was already growing too long for my liking and I had the draw the line somewhere... and as I mention above, unless we are travelling the car is garaged most of the time. Time will tell whether I regret this choice!

Hey, I've ordered the new Disco (P360) as well. However, they called me today that they cannot produce my car, since they cancelled all orders for base and S model, although mine was in price of HSE. I placed the order in August as well and the factory where these cars are produced is literally like 75km from me. I've been thinking whether to reconfigure it to SE/HSE or cancel the order and I'm just disgusted, especially because I don't know what I want now [biggrin]

I thought I'd use it offroad on occasions, but as I've found out, it's not that easy (more like forbidden) in EU countries, so the rear diff lock would be useless I guess, as there's not many options on where to use it and as I've read, the disco can handle it well even without it. Then the SE/HSE comes with mandatory sunroof (this is why I went with base model originally), which only makes sense when you get 3rd row of seats (didn't want them before). I've seen some mods on this forum that wouldn't be possible with the 3rd row. I wanted more space for stuff that would come handy in case I'd overland, but I'm not sure that would be possible (heard people go east on adventures outside of the EU). At first I wanted P300 because it's not mild hybrid, but then found out the rear diff lock was available only in P360, but now as rear diff lock is out of picture I'm not sure what would be better. The difference is around 4.5k euros (consider many people earn sub 1k per month in my country, I'd say many think 1k is a lot lol).

Also, you mentioned repair cost of the UV windshield :o The option is only about 300€ more, but I was wondering how much it would be in case it would need to be replaced. Didn't know it's much more fragile as well :/ Does it help though? Europe is not that hot as Australia.

Newbie here. I just took delivery of a MY22 HSE D300, only done 300kms, but may be able to help with specific queries. Have not played with the car as yet tho. HSE comes standard with 22"BTW.
I am an ex tyre design engineer and test driver amongst other things but have not yet looked at AT yet. My van arrives this week and has 17", so am considering getting a set of 17" wheels if they fit over the calipers, etc so I can swap with the van as needed. Ill try in the next week or so. Dealer says 17 are OK.
Ride on the 22's is fine IMO, but this is a very subjective issue. You will not necessarily get a better ride with smaller diam rims as it also depends on the tyres. It can be worse.
I did not spec mine. just grabbed one a dealer specced: Advanced Off Road Capability pack, roof, tow, roof rails.

I'm pretty sure that aftermarket 18" rims are as small as you can go - Tuffants for example. Certainly not 17" rims. Also, matching Land Rover rims to trailer will be a challenge as the centre circle is very small and things like Alko hubs cannot be machined to fit. Same problem with Jeep and Amarok wheels, by the way.
