View Full Version : D4 Door Trim repair?

The sill trim in my MY14 D4 has started to wear where my elbow sits on the window sill. In the last couple of days the vinyl itself has teared as in the photo.

Anyone know how to tackle this? If I leave it I think its going to spread, particularly as now it has teared and exposed the sticky glued surface underneath. Replacing the trim panel would be the ultimate solution, if they are even available? Tape? Some other temporary repair?

I use the vehicle every day for work. It doesn't need to be pristine. Just a repair that is stable would be a good solution ATM.

Cheers, Chris.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211214/004a240f8fbc4bb13690366d010873ec.jpg

Following with interest, as I have the same issue

I've wondered if the top section of the door card could be revinyled - just the textured black bit...?

Mine has just gotten to this point also…

Let’s see where this thread goes - otherwise I’m off to the trimmer…

I had the same on my 2011 TDV6. I replaced the door card with one from a salvage yard.

Mines slightly sticky but still intact. You must all be heavy elbowed!

I used these guys (https://www.myleatherdoctor.com.au/get-a-free-quote/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAnuGNBhCPARIsACbnLzoYp4Lu-4ujRqb171NU9kEhj8UfXQLcjilkj37d_CaWag8pkZdbsv0aAo7 BEALw_wcB) on my D3 which had a fairly beaten up interior. I was happy with the results, if you knew where to look you could see the repairs but anyone just getting in the car wouldn't know.

Many years ago I had a vinyl repair kit. Basically you applied a liquid to the area and then placed a "grain" pad on top to give it a similar look to the area being patched. Might be worth a look if you're not fussy about the finish.

SCA has them. Here's a link. I googled vinyl repair kit and the first pop up was a Kogan one which was about half the price but then you get inundated with spam mail for a while.

We are lucky to all have dry itchy skin.....

And the bulldust soaks up the rest.

Off topic, but I set up separate e-mail addresses when I have to buy stuff from organisations like that. Then once I've finished with them I delete the address.

Seems apple has that functionality now through its Hide My Email functionality.

I personally use Google Workspaces and their “Promotion” classification works well. All filed away for/if I want to read them but otherwise don’t get in my way.

Surely off-topic

Yep its the oils etc from your skin.
Can randomly attack that door panel top, the 3 knobs in the centre console, steering wheel.
They all go to a nasty sticky to gooey surface.

I've looked at taking the door card (as the top part while it looks like a separate section is part of the whole card) to my motor trimmers and see if they can do anything with it. This of course means, stripping the card off taking it in, etc etc etc... seems all a bit long winded

yet a toyota van from the 90's the surfaces are fine.

Not sure whether it's the same issue but I've had things such as umbrella handles and joysticks and mice going sticky. Used isopropyl alcohol and after a few goes it comes back to normal.

May be worth a try with a small patch to see if it helps.

I have one of these kits out in the shed. Have yet to use it on the Disco, but have done one repair on the dash of the wife's Camry. It turned out OK and you can't really see where the repair was done now.

I have a small (about 15mm) hole in the top of my driver's door card, and another slightly smaller in the top of the dash in the Disco - both originating back in the days when I used to be a smoker and frequently smoked in the car on long trips. Have been meaning to patch both holes with this kit, but have gotta go and get me one of those "round tuit's". One of these days ....

12 years and 300,000km and my door trim is fine, and my elbow lives on it? Maybe it’s my Maybelline?

I thought for the average owner that was a blend of engine oil and transfer case fluid.

x7 or x8, or however many others have already replied...

I recall seeing another thread where the door card was replaced - this seemed to be the best, most attractive and permanent (and costly) solution... [bigsmile]

When not driving mine lives out of the sun. I notice a huge difference between it and others of similar age inside and out which is no surprise.

Compared to other cars the inside is in amazing condition for age but I have pov pack SE.

Worst ever we had a late 90s Volvo V70. The inside basically self destructed before 10 years. Seats split on the seams and door cards the vinyl shrank and pulled away from the card. Every button turned tacky and window switches fell apart. ABS unit failed. What a POS.

And I never use poisons like Armourall in any car I own.

HI Chatterbox, in Perth I am very happy with the repair to my door sill carried out by Colin from New Life, Vinyl & Leather Repair, 0418 691 248 Car Leather, Plastic & Vinyl Restoration | New Life Repairs (http://www.newliferepairs.com.au) Some time back I hope he is still in operation, very good outcome.
