Simple question I hope. I have not removed the compressor yet but I can see "Made in Japan" on it, can I assume it is a Hitachi? And where is the best place to source a kit from? Nick

Photos help to diagnose which model you have. The Hitachi is easily rebuilt

That should sort it out for you, its a good kit. Make sure to clean around the compressor and inside of the foam lined cover. I enlarged the drain hole and blew out everything with compressed air.

I was surprised how much crud could actually get in behind the cover!

Yep, adds to the heat load. After putting the kit through the air side, take 30min to pull the motor rotor out of the housing and clean this out with electrical contact cleaner and compressed air. Amazing how much carbon build up and dust gets in. Your compressor motor will love you for it. Mines still the original Hitachi unit, going strong after 11 years and one full overhaul.

If you fit an APT compressor guard, would you leave the cover off to improve cooling?

I left it on. I was getting compressor faults that went away after cleaning out the complete blockage of sand in there

The cover partially protects the wiring and air lines from road grime. The apt bash plate from impacts. The apt plate spans the chassis rail and to the body, but provides no protection from water or dirt.

I'd be leaving the cover in place.
