L322 Off-road (Sand) Experience

who has had experience driving a L322 on Australian sand beaches. How capable is the vehicle?

About as capable as any other 4x4 with lockers/good traction control. It’s more so about technique and tyre size/pressures though.

Not beach sand, but my MY12 with its CVDs was exceptionally good on the chopped-up / dug-out approaches to the sand ridges on Googs track where its tyres always had good ground pressure, albeit with the suspension raised 30mm.

Lower tyre pressures,i usually go to 25 PSI to start with,then down to 18 in the soft stuff.
Make sure stability control is off,and be carefull as it comes on each time the engine is started.
If it isnt off,you will get stuck,guaranteed.
i always take a long handled shovel,and have snatch straps,shackles,etc.

Raise suspension if needed,momentum is your friend,good luck with it all.

She is a heavy beast so low pressures, offroad height and momentum, gearing (low range where possible) and centre diff locked (should do automatically shouldnt it?) would be the go (i imagine). Here's me driving my 05 L322 (model without the terrain selector) on the beach for over an hour. All raw footage. Pretty sure it was at 18psi, 275/65/R18 AT's.

I did a few trips to North Stradbroke without issue - 285/50’s at 18psi; a Member here towed a van across the Simpson with his 3.6TDV8….(!) so probably enough there to say “very good on sand” !!!

Ive taken my 2008 tdv8 L322 to Straddy, Bribie, Moreton and Fraser several times using both 19” & 18” tyres. Ive only got stuck once briefly at the bottom end of Straddie as forgot to turn off DSC, coming off the beach. After a clearing sand away from wheels i reversed out, and went again this time with DSC off.

It’s pretty easy in a L322.

Also, Llams to set EAS height would be good to have (have since fitted one) to help ensure momentum isn’t lost from bottoming out.

Hi Lox, I took my 02 L322 to Fraser Is in 2006 and other than letting my standard road tyres down to 18 and raise the height, I did not change any setting and I had no problems keeping up and going where other 4x4s went, and that was ALL sand driving.
